Oil on drive and smoke

Hey guys - Ive got a 99 S8 and it has always had the "oil on the drive" afliction which i always thought was the leaking gaskets and o ring for the driveshaft - common problem on an S8 IIRC. Anyhoo - i am interested in getting the best deal to get this sone so i shopped around. One place confirmed it was what i thought - driveshaft seals - but another informed me it was a new rocker and cam seals were required - how likely is this im wondering....? I get the blue smoke coming through the front wheel arch - all classic driveshaft seal issues so how did they get a rocker and cam seals?? Or am i having a moment of madness?

Secondly - the car has developed a tendancy to veer over to the left on perfectly straight roads which makes me think i need a wheel alignment - does anyone have any recommendations....small indepenant tyre dealer, independant garage or main tyre dealer??

Bear in mind a car should have a slight tendancy to veer left, its in theory so if you nod off or let got of the wheel you are more likely to hit the side of the road than oncoming traffic... It shouldn't be significant though, you shouldnt have to fight it 169144-ok.gif

I had the burning oil smoke from the gap in the bonnet and wing. That was the cam cover seals, which was an easy job by me on both my A8 4.2 and previous A6 2.8. My current A6 2.8 had one side done as well, but there was extra pipes and stuff on this one, so the garage done it.

Lift the bonnet, remove the plastic bollox, start the engine and then wait to see where the wisps of smoke come from.

You might also want to rub some kitchen roll down where the cam covers meet the cylinder heads to see if there is oil there to start with. Obviously, it should be dry.
