terrymcg
I was driving to work this morning and the yellow oil warning came on my DIS to say that my level was low. Don't know how as I check it quite regular. Anyway, so when I checked it, it was on the minumum mark. How much oil would normally be needed to fix this? As I banged in 0.5 of a litre and it now appears to be a bit above the max. Only a tiny bit. Do you reckon 0.5 a litre was too much? The dipstick aint the easiest thing to read with all the funny shapes on it! Whats wrong with a flat one with min and max on?!!? Terry
Mook
If the level is above the dipstick, then, to answer your question, yes, you put too much in! You just need to make sure the car is on a level surface and all that, as well as (preferably) cold.

terrymcg
Update, Just got Audi to check it, and they agreed the dipsticks are a bit gash and hard to read due to the ball above the max mark always getting oil on it from the side of the sleeve. And it makes your stick look like it is over the level. They said there is bulit in margin for error above the max mark and that the level is fine. And that normally if the light comes on you need about 1 litre to bring it back to the proper level. Terry

Phil1978
As per reply on another forum Terry : I could be completely wrong here, but I always thought the difference between the min and max was about a litre of oil . . . . I'm sure it was on my last few cars. Is yours the twisted metal stranded dipstick or the pressed metal dipstick Terry???
terrymcg
Phil, Yeah what you said is pretty much what Audi said to me, 1 litre! My dipstick is neither what you described, although I know what your are on about in both cases. Mine has a ball below the min and a ball above the max. The problem that makes this design so bonk, is that as you slide the dipstick back into the sleeve, the balls rub on the side and get oil deposited onto them. So it is very hard to take an accurate reading. Not sure if you can change the dipstick and if they are all a standard length? Terry
Soulboy
I checked mine the other week (it was below min - despite having only done 5k miles and just passing the Audi check) I agree, that dipstick is incredibly difficult and awkward! I put just over 1L in mine to bring it up to 3/
