james22
Hi guys, I ordered my new GTI from Motorprovider back at the start of June, and expect to take delivery within the next couple of weeks...can't wait! Obviously, one thing on my mind is security - the GTI is a very desirable car, and I'd like to keep it as protected as possible. I read with interest an article in Autoexpress a couple of months back regarding an additional immobiliser that could be fitted to a car, and have now just managed to find some web links: http://www.2besmart.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9&Itemid=19 http://www.2besmart.com/manuals/english.pdf It's basically a device which sits in the engine bay next to the battery and acts like a switch turning on and off the power to the rest of the car. Once activated, the car cannot be started as the device won't allow any power to the starter system. You can de-activated by a key fob. So, I was just wondering what your opinions were on the concept of an additional immobilser in general, and whether you think it's worth the extra peace of mind? Also, what do you think of the Cadillock? Do you think it could cause problems with the car's electronics? Thanks, James
RedRobin
A Warm Welcome to Tyresmoke, James . Thanks for posting those links - People will doubtless get back to you soon. (I'm off out).
scillyisles
The Caddilock is a current limiting device in that when engaged it does not allow a large current through it. It does however allow smaller current through it so that normal car electronic components are not affected. Typically when you engage the starter motor the battery delivers a large amount of current to turn the engine over Cadilock stops this happening. Two questions I would have would be : - can you still roll start the car which does not require the use of the starter motor thus bypassing the Cadilock? - what happens if you accidentally engage the Cadilock when you are driving? My guess is that the answers to these two questions will be mutally exclusive.
Tarmac_Terrorist
I honestly don't think it's worth it. I think very few thieves could bypass the existing systems. I reckon the two most favoured ways of nicking one would be to transport it away on a recovery type truck or to approach you / your home for the keys. I suspect the days where some pikey spends a few minutes playing with wires etc have now long gone. Anyone nicking a new GTI is more organised IMO If I was you I'd put my money towards Gap insurance or possibly Xmas!
JonnyGTi
Welcome to Tyresmoke James, and GTI ownership (soon) You might also want to consider some good locking wheel nuts for your brand new Monzas - most people have gone with McGuards
james22
Thanks for the welcome guys I guess there are some un-answered questions about how it works. It would be dangerous if it inadvertently was activated when you were driving... I think something like that would be a good idea however as it would mean that if thiefs got hold of your keys they still wouldn't be able to drive off with the car (assuming you keep the 2nd immobiliser's key fob separately) Good idea about the gap insurance - been looking into insurance in general today, and Sainsbury's bank came up as the cheapest for me bizzarely enough, beating the quote from places like Adrian Flux And, getting additional security for the wheels - well, I hadn't though of that! Guess that's not too expensive though. Anyway, looking forward to joining in more as soon as I get my car.
Snoopy
Im sure like all aftermarket immobilisers it has a wire connected to the IGN to tell it when the Ignition is on. FYI the standard system as they are all the same is not as hard to bypass as people think. One of a few things i did fit to mine was a toad text alert, it texts me if the car is moved, and can be tracked like mobile phones.

Woke up Monday morning at 3.00 am to find a copper at the door, enquiring as to where my car was. It's in the garage i reply. Are you sure sir ?? Quick look - no it's not. It's been crashed in thick fog at jn 8/9 of the M4/A404. They broke in knicked the keys, and made off with it, got a few miles down the road and stuffed it into the armco at a reasonable rate of knots judging by the size and shape of the dent. I really hope they hurt themselves. Copper was at first insinuating (sp) that I had done it because they could find out how they got in, but it seems that they put their hand throught the letter box and worked the door handle. Pretty pi55ed off a the moment. Whatever way I look at it it's going to cost me. Dont really want a smashed and fixed car back, but I also dont want to buy another thief magnet either. What really unsettles me is that they have been in my house, just yard from me, wife and two young kids. So I think whatever happens the car is going/written off, and I think I'll get a tdi or similar. Also they stole my laptop and emptied the content of teh bag all along the road along with the other stuff in the car. Also made off with my wallet. so had to cancel all my cards in the middle of a postal strike, and I dont know if my ipod is still there - dont really hold out much hope!!! I'll see teh damage in the next few days when they release it from the pound, but the traffic copper said it wasnt a pretty sight - great !! Been to see it today... this is the latest... well saw the car today and yes not a pretty sight. Front bumper off, front offside corner and wing sheered off, along with ingress into the engine bay, some bit hanging off, and the engine sagging towards this corner. All along the offside is mangled, and the rear offside 3 qtr arch is bent and twisted. The engine does start, but shuts off within 2 secs with warnings - basically it's fubarred !!! I was going to take some pics, but the garages threw a spanner in the works (no pun intended snigger), by saying that the claim was on hold because I hadnt declared my non standard alloys. My backside was twiching sixpence/half a crown !!! I am with privilege and just renewed with them on 28th sept but.......being a tight arse I let the policy lapse and took another out online thus getting a discount. I did declare the alloys last year, but because I had bought a new policy I forgot to add them to the new policy. After a few calls they let me add them since they could see that they were on ther last year, but charged me £80.00 - there was no charge lst year !! So leason learned mak sure you declare everything - a bit of a stressfull day to say the least. So next visit I will get some pics. fresco1
Yikes, not nice at all - feel for you, I've been there myself (but sounds like mine was with less damage and not knicked). Hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction, good luck!
Tarmac_Terrorist
Blimey - that's shocking! At least you and your family are physically unharmed. I hope they didn't wear their seat belts It got me wondering - do I need to declare my Monza 2's or are they considered 'standard' because they are the manufacturer's optional extras? james22
That's awful Steve, thinking someone has broken into your home whilst you've been in. And you actually kept the car in a garage too, so they must have specifically been after it. I just hope that you managed to get everything sorted with the insurance quickly. I am very worried about the GTI being a 'magnet' for crime - which is why I really want to fit additional security. I can see how something like the text alert would be good, but it doesn't stop the car being taken in the first place if the theifs have the keys. I'm going to do some more research in the next couple of weeks, but any recommendations on what's good/not good in this area would be most welcome. JonnyGTi
Ouch, that's a terrible story Steve....particularly with your car locked away in a garage. It'll all get sorted in time though...I hope it's pretty soon so you can put it all behind you. A very similar thing happpened to someone else on here a fair few months ago with their GTi. Did you have GAP insurance ? ... it might make a happier ending if your car is a write off.
Snoopy
Theres many different type of imobilizer out there, Even biometric ones but some theifs may want your fingers then too! Sometimes it maybe better to let them go then stop the car by immobilising it remotely. There are many different anti car jacking systems like this on the market. Jack_is_Back
[ QUOTE ] It got me wondering - do I need to declare my Monza 2's or are they considered 'standard' because they are the manufacturer's optional extras? [/ QUOTE ] I'm insured with Privilege. When I rang up to swap the policy to the GTI they asked if it had any optional extras. I mentioned the alloys, leather interior and xenon headlghts (there's more but I couldn't remember at the time) and when the docs came back they're all listed on the schedule under the title 'non-standard extras fitted to a brand new car'. The xenons are actually listed as 'headlight lens covers' as the person on the phone didn't seem to have a clue what they were... Think I may write to the insurers and get all my factory fitted options listed - it may help bolster a claim should the need arise.
