jcarm
I am losing hydraulic steering fluid. Inspection of steering rack does not indicate that I am losing fluid from the rack piston. Leak appears to be near the center of the rack due to oil dropping on from of cat. conv. Any ideas?
Edd_W
common fault on earlier cars. The internal seals fail and the fluid leaks out of the gaiters.
jcarm
Forgot that info. 1995 quattro. Also, do you know if a VW rack is interchangeable? VW parts seem to be quite a bit less expensive. Thanks
Edd_W
Very unlikely, the only possiblity is the early passat 92 to 97 series but I think it highly unlikely to fit. I would take you rack off and take it to someone to re-condition. Euro car parts or German and swedish may do an exchange service. Where are you? Edd_W
You will be best to find someone mail-order to supply a replacement rack.
