Mattchaps
On my first drive of the new year this morning I noticed that condensation was still on the inside of the rear windows and around the edge of my window where there was water on the outside. As I have the climatronic set to AUTO all the time, I never get condensation... So when I got home I had a little play and was switching the climatronic between ECON and AUTO. Normally when switching to AUTO you can hear/feel the compressor start working and the engines idle revs momentarily rise to cope with the increase in power required... guess what, this wasn't happening this morning. Please could someone shed any possibilities, I'm hoping for it to be a blown fuse but if it isn't are we talking a new compressor... how much? Cheers, Matt
Mattchaps
Well it's not the fuse Only hope I have now is that I'm going through VW customer services regarding the cooling fan issues. As it's the fan that cools the compressor which doesn't work, I may have to try my hardest and get VW to see that it's a direct result of the fan issue that the compressor has packed up. Oh Joy of joy.
Tobes49
Did you check the fuses on the battery???
Mattchaps
I took off the battery cover, and then a smaller cover which revealed 3 fuses. They seem ok. Are there any more that are worth checking?

Mattchaps
Hmm, no definative answers so far. Due to complaining to VW Customer Services Re: cooling fan issue, I'm letting them run a diagnosis this afternoon. Let's hope they can find out what's wrong, and then offer to do it for free PS. Yes, I know I'm dreaming, but I live in hope too
Brisel
What was the outside temperature when you tried to use the aircon? Many aircon systems won't operate at less than 5 - 6oC due to the risk of the refridgerant (sp) not fully evaporating and the liquid wrecking the compressor. I have no idea if this applies to VAG cars but do have a good read of the owners manual. My cooling fans have stopped working with Climatronic on, so I hope that this is the reason, otherwise my fan resistors are fecked & I will need yet ANOTHER new fan unit! Mattchaps
Well, I've just got back from VW and they said that the compressor is fine (temp. was about 2'C so Brisel you may be right). However, they have said that I need new cooling fans (which I knew already), now the case is with VW Customer Care, lets hope the New Year Spirit is still with them and they offer to replace them for free Hopefully tomorrow the temp will be higher and I'll hear my compressor working and VW will phone with good news and it will be a good day... Tarmac_Terrorist
My understanding is that vw air con does not work when the external temperature is below 5'c for the reasons stated above
jimmyp
Matt, i no Khutula is having issues with his air con system, might be worth having a chat to him to see what his out come was.
Mattchaps
Cheers Jimmy will do Just waiting to see if all is well once the temperature outside goes about 5'C
Henry52
It is very unlikely the compressor would overheat and as long as you switch it on a couple of times a month to stop the seals drying out it is unlikely to break down, it's a reliable bit of kit. The fans are not to keep the compressor cool they are there to cool the condenser, which cools the gas. As for not blowing icy cold I don't think it's supposed to, doesn't it only allow you to set a minimum temperature of 17degC which isn't exactly icy. If you don't think it's blowing as cold as it says on your temperature display then stick a temperature probe in one of the air vents and see how the reading compares with what your display says. Mattchaps
Well the a/c is working properly after all. Not entirely sure what caused the one off condensation problem, but its not been back and since the temp has been > 5'C the compressor is working as per normal. After a little fight with VW they are offering me 20% good will on the replacement cooling fans. Would have been more if it was full VW service history, but since its been out of warranty I take it to my local VW specialist. Anyways, I've decided to accept their offer and the car is going in this afternoon to have the fans replaced. Had a quick phone round and no one could get close to the price with the 20% off unless non-original parts were used. So from this afternoon my car will have properly working coolings fans for the first time since god knows when!
Henry52
I'd love to get my hands one one of those knackered fans I'm sure I could do a fix (on the fan) for under £10. If you don't mind me asking how much are they charging.
Mattchaps
I know Dan32 did the resistor mod and got his working fine After the 20% discount I paid £340.99. Cheapest quote I got from other places was £400. If I'd have seen your post before I'd left I would have asked to keep the old fans. Sorry. At least I have proper working fans now
Henry52
I sure hope these ones last, seems that some cars have fans that last for ever and others are on their second or third set. Do you now get an origional 3 year warrenty on these new fans. Sorry about all the questions.
