edo
All, after your thoughts. The dealer (BMW main) who I am buying my used 335d lost the V5. It is a 1 owner car. First purchaser traded it back in after a year and 6,000 miles. The dealer couldnt tax it so has leant me a demo since before xmas. Unfortunately they have requested a replacement V5 rather than me or the previous owner, and I am informed by the DVLA that the dealer will be the "2nd owner". This is a pain in the arse of course, as I will appear to be the 3rd. The dealer has said that they will write a letter confirming what has happened, and the previous owner will be the dealer - so it should be easy to explain. In all other respects the car is excellent - low miles, great spec (Leather, Prof Nav, Bluetooth, and best of all the 5 year service and Maintenance pack). Dealer has already suggested some sort of reduction, but we havent spoken about how much yet. So - what would you push for? I traded my 320d, and am paying 19.5k (14 for mine, 33.5 for the 335d). At the moment I have only paid a deposit and could walk - I've asked them to look out similar cars stating I am not happy.
theduisbergkid
I don't think its a big deal, if I were buying a car and the seller explained the situation to me, with supporting documentation, I wouldn't mind at all. Mind you, it is January, so squeeze 'em for all you can !
bells0
How long u plan on keeping it for? - if short term i would walk as will hit residuals, even if they do write a letter. If keeping for a while - screw them for a reduction and go for it!

edo
Thanks guys. Problem is that 335d coupe's with low miles, Nav and the service park are thin on the ground. Planning to keep it a year at least (famous last words). Have emailed asking for an "adjustment". We'll see what they come back with.

PsYcHe
Could be worse.. They sold my neighbours car with the private plate still on it, even though it had been transferred off. Took months to sort out.
DHA
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] BMW dealers and V5 issues, more owners than they say. Sounds very familiar [/ QUOTE ] Tell me more? [/ QUOTE ] I bought what was described as a one owner car. When the V5 arrived with me I was owner number 3, the second being the dealer. I did challenge them about it but they came up with some story about buying out the lease from the original owner. I was young and naïve at the time and did nothing more. I have heard of a few others with "odd" V5s from BMW dealers.
edo
Interesting. Everything they are telling me seems to be tallying at the moment - they certainly havent tried to hide anything. Will keep you posted on how it progresses... At the moment I am using one of their cars with their insurance, and have only paid a deposit, so it is in their interests to get it sorted... Booster
Another BMW "mis-sell" on a V5 issue: Mate of mine bought a BMW dealers X5 demonstrator. He was told that there would be a delay in him getting it as they had to keep it for X amount of time as it was a demo car. Fair enough he said as long as it wasn't used for any more demos and both he and the dealer wrote down the mileage to confirm this. Two or three weeks later he gets the car and the V5 comes through a few weeks later with him as the third owner. He looks at the V5 and does a bit of digging and it turns out that the original owner had it for one day and it was sold to the dealer. The original owner was registered disabled and hence wouldn't have paid any VAT on the car....... I know of several dealerships that pay disabled people a retainer to register a few cars each year so that the dealership can get them without VAT and hence make a nice few quid. Very naughty. stooH
What kind of disability do you have to have to avoid paying vat? Presumably a blue badge for the car won't do it?
patently
[ QUOTE ] What kind of disability do you have to have to avoid paying vat? [/ QUOTE ] And how painful is it to self-inflict?

[/ QUOTE ] If you qualify for motability then you can get the VAT off IIRC. The scheme is widely abused. There has been several articles about it in the press in the past few months. Dadstoys
But worth exploring - I have this friend - cough - who's dad is registered disabled, and his dad is looking at his next car purchase.

garcon magnifique
Attempting to get back on topic... I have to say I'd trust a document produced by DVLA before I'd trust a car dealer. I suspect the V5 is entirely accurate and your 'one owner' car had a former life... probably only a brief one, perhaps simply pre-registered, maybe an ex-demo... before it went to its first proper owner. edo
The V5 isnt back yet, but I've spoken to the DVLA. The extra owner is the dealer - and is the last one, so it all adds up in theory.
Merlot
I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy the car.
edo
Thanks. Dealer called today and the used sales manager is speaking to the directors on monday about a further discount. Cant complain about the way it is being handled at the moment. All being well I might be in it next Saturday...
edo
V5 has finally arrived, so I will be colecting the car on either Friday or Saturday. Hurrah. Dealer offered a paint protection system "worth" £400 (declined), or "a few hundred" off. Pushed for a bit more and a new Nav DVD.
