PaulW
I am going to install an amp and subwoofer in the trunk of my S8. I bought an alpine single channel amp, RMS Power at 4 Ohms 220 W x 1, RMS Power at 2 Ohms 400 W x 1. Here is the actual amp.....good price, huh? The thing weighs a metric ton! It has a line level input, so I will be taping the bose speakers in the trunk for input. I will be buying probably a high quality 8" subwoofer and making an enclosure. Then velco'ing the enclosure to the back of the seat assembly in the trunk. My question is, does anybody have a set up like this or anything like it, and if so, can you describe it or post pictures? Thanks. Here is a link to something similar that was done. Look at the speaker enclosure. http://vader.inow.com/~drbob/carstereo.html#
Ska
Hi Paul, That a great price considering the exchange rate as well. I run a complete old school Alpine set up in my car with two 10" R type subs and a 400/600wrms alpine amp (will replace with a more efficient class D version). The subs are in two separate encolsures and what I found was that the sound was rather muffled as I had no way of "venting" the bass through to the cabin so I opened up the ski hatch hole thingy. I'm not sure if an 8" sub will be enough it all depends on your preference and your ears but it will certainly be tight bass sound. What might be an idea is to hook up the amp and take it to an ICE dealer and try some of their sub enclosures. I would think that the OEM subs etc have finely tuned enclosures to maximise performance of the speaker. Personally I would now go for a couple of 12" subs in a sealed box simply because they are a good alround performer for the variety of music I listen to. Also I have more than one amp to contend to and loads of other "ICE black boxes" so this has a separate amp rack. I will try and post some pics later
ghemmings
An 8 inch sub won't make a lot of difference, as the surface area of the stock speakers will be more than this. A couple of 10 inch subs will do the trick, as Ska suggests. IMHO, 12 inch subs and larger are too sloppy and no where near as tight and controlled as 8 or 10 inch subs. Bare in mind, four 8 inch subs are about the same surface area as two 10 inch subs. If you stick with two 10's, you won't be dissapointed. If you want 8's, you'll need four. Ten's have a better low frequency responce though. I had four 10 inch subs in my car and the bass was awsome, when set up right. Your amp looks great. A good buy. This will drive you four 8inch subs beautifully in series/parallel mode (two in series connected in parallel with two in series), or you two 10's connected in series. Ska
I think Paul will be reluctant to go for multiple subs as he's just moved to an S8 so may be keen to keep the weight down. Your spot on about the subs surface area; each additional speaker is an almost automatic 3dB increase then another 3 for the doubling of power as the dB is logerithmic scale a 3dB increase is almost twice as loud to the human ear IIRC. Also you can get tight sounding 12's with little roll off but I guess you have to spend the monies for that and right again on the low frequency response about the larger speakers as their size means they are that much closer to the low frequency wavelengths of bass. But equaly suitable tailor made enclosure can control the "suspension movement" of a smaller sub to reproduce better performance at the low end; though I don't know how low you want to go as below a certain frequency you cant actually hear bass but only feel it vibrating the ASF of the A8
