Chav
Why the feck don't we have this rule!!! ...just like the Americans with their turn right on red, which amazingly enough - is a jolly splendid idea!!
burble
My thoughts exactly! Turning right on a red works pretty well in the US even if I often get stuck behind brits who don't want to do it
Andy_Bangle
We have that rule here in Sweden too, the only drawback is that pedestrians and cycylists have right of way (ie: The green walk sign) when you are turning right which can lead to some close shaves, then again pedestrians and cycylists are expendable
garcon magnifique
I agree it'd be a good rule, but I doubt our great British drivers could cope...
cruiser647
Would be a great idea, BUT for the pedestrian crossings. You would need crossing education lessons for all and big crossing islands in the middle of each road.
steelwind101
Its a nice idea, having spent a lot of time in the USA i think it works very well. I can see some mindless, partial implementation of this idea somewhere in Britian leading to mass confusion!

edo
A great idea - spoiled by the fact that the vast majority of drivers in this country struggle with simple concepts like roundabouts and indication, let alone being allowed to use common sense for something. 330dcoupe
like everything else over there, the roads are quite wide in the US - Mistakes can be forgiving, as you have more space to maneuver - if things went belly up. I think over here, the roads aren't so forgiving and small - the tiniest mistake can be punished with an airbag in yer face. Well, that's my opinion of it. Dadstoys
Bit like being able to overtake in any lane, also seen in the USA, we won't get it here because it makes sense, and there are too many 'drivers' that couldn't cope.
Sponge
Disagree on that one. Overtaking in any lane doesn't make more sense than only on the right. Knowing that a car should pass you only on the right is better than knowing it could be on either. The reason our way doesn't always work is it requires lane discipline, i.e. moving over to the left when you've finished overtaking. And people don't. Rachel
Hmm. We have a turn left on red after stopping on quite a few (not all) intersections down under. It seems to work quite well, even if adjacent to a pedestrian crossing. Mind you apparently speed kills (so we are endlessly told) so no one goes through them faster than 10km/h. bazza_g
Crossing the road with a green man at the crossing in New York means you take your life in your hands thanks to the turning right on a red rule
Paul
Leave it as it is. There are enough people on the road, that cannot cope with the current systems used.
v6tas
[ QUOTE ] I agree it'd be a good rule, but I doubt our great British drivers could cope... [/ QUOTE ] Not one to be sexist but most women confuse "green" means go with "green" means hastily pack away the make up..then go. So how the hell will they cope with being able to move when the light is red
Chav
So we're all agreed then.... bring in the new turn left on red rule, and through survival of the fittest style culling, the remaining population will have an IQ above 80. Result!
