S6 any good?

I've seen an S6 with 6,000 miles on it at a stealer for a tad over £39,000.

Its in black with all usual stuff - leather, sat nav etc etc.

It looks like a bargain and I think the stealer will do a deal too.

I'm a bit worried about the fuel costs but having checked out the service costs they are not much more than my A6 S-Line 2.7TDI quattro.

Any comments?

Yes i agree prices are dropping and they are not far off those of the V8 S-Line cars now.

Still, if you want a quick car that's family friendly (as in lots of space) too then I still think its a good price, especially if I can get a good deal.

Its a lot of car for the money and very stealthy.

It is an awful lot of car for the money. I'd have a good try out in one first though (goes without saying) ... it got slated by the motoring press for an awful ride. (Not been in one myself).

Dunno how much more they are, but I'd say an Avant is the better proposition. Much better looking than the saloon too IMO.

I could never understand the appeal of this car. Its not fast but drinks fuel. Its so understanted even a car enthusiast wouldnt know what it is. There are so many faster, economical and desiralble cars out there. As a used buy its slightly different but still...

it is a lot of car, but there are two things to face: its press rep, and the ride. Even if /you/ can live with the ride, you've got to ask yourself, will the next buyer?

iirc, there were one or two reviews done here, try a search

I thin the Press Rep is something to ignore. I've never bothered about what they have said. If I drive it and like it, that is usually good enough for me. Bollox to the press.

I've been out in S6's twice, trying to talk myself into one (used of course) but each time I can't live with the suspension.

I wouldn't call it slow though.

Oh, and don't believe the book values for these cars - they trade at well under book. I wouldn't pay over £35k retail for one and I'd still expect it to actually trade at only £20k after I'd had it two years.

There are plenty of good reviews of this car if you look for them. I think it's been unfairly criticised and overlooked in some circles, and those I've spoken to who have driven the car feel that it's very underrated, probably as a result of the often cursory 'reviews' in the UK press.

Here are a few. In a couple of them it outranks the M5:

Is the suspension that much different to an A6 s-line or A6 4.2?

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess so, as those cars don't appear to garner the same criticism where the ride is concerned. The comments about the S6's ride seem to be consistent enough to conclude that Audi didn't get its suspension quite right (for the UK, at least).

It always makes me laugh how some people will queue up to bash a car based on its ride not being quite right, yet we are all content to drive around on some of the crappest roads in Europe. crazy.gif

I think its to do with the fact that you can choose a car but not a road.

Anyway, the ride on my M Sport 535d (on 19" non runflats) which I bought instead of an S6 is far better. I wish I had 4WD traction but the Beemer is better in the wet than I expected - possibly all that low rev torque.

I don't know if you've driven one, but for a load-hauling estate car, it's not slow. Make what you like of 0-62 times, but they're never the forte of quattro-equipped cars. On the road, in real overtaking situations, it's a quick car.
