Chillihead
Hi all, loving the snow, Mmmm quattro. Is it just me, does anyone with 6sp ever use 5th? I do on very, very rare occasions, not that often though, certainly never go from 1st to 6th in order. Usually either 4th to 6th or on occasion, like pulling on to a motorway, 3rd to 6th? Am I missing something, other, that is than the purpose of 5th? Look forward to your comments. P.S, anyone have the slightest idea, why the cigarette lighter in my centre console flips out of sight? Chav
You've got a 3.0 petrol right? Well when overtaking at 70mph on the motorway, 5th is far nippier than 6th. Similarly 5th will be far better for keeping up speed on b-roads. (more responsive) Also better for using the quattro to shove you round a bend at speed (in dry weather) - the more torque being sent, the more goes to the rear wheels (50%), so the better the handling. Merlot
My S4 likes the 2nd to 6th change at 4k revs but 5th is good on B roads as chav says.

[/ QUOTE ] IIRC in around 2004 Audi changed from the flipping version to the fixed one as standard on most models; apparently people were folding it away while it was heating up and getting it jammed shut, and this was seen as a 'design fault'. spikeyboy
Agree - i hardly ever use 5th - normally go straight from 3rd or 4th to 6th

maersk
More torque? 50 - 50 torque split on quattro apart from RS4 (60 - 40) and new A4 surely. Only psuedo quattro A3 and TT have variable through the haldex unit which is why it (A3, TT) is inferior. Block changing can be good in many situations 'missing' 3, 4 or 5 depending on circumstances. Chav
[ QUOTE ] More torque? [/ QUOTE ] yep - the torque generated by the engine isn't always constant! (so at 1300rpm in a 3.0V6 petrol in 6th gear, there's much less torque being sent to the rear, than at 3000rpm in 5th say)
J_C
I sometimes go from 3rd straight into 5th, or 4th into 6th in the S4. It's very easy to drive around perfectly normally using only three gears.

Merlot
I know what you mean but the 1st to 3rd shift can be a touch tricky at times.
Golfer
I never bother with 1st in the RS, 2nd, 4th and 6th when poodling around.
