NickHodgson
The front tyres (Michelin PS 235/40/ZR18/95Y) on my A4 2.0TDI saloon are down to just under 3mm so ready for change. I've had a look on Black Circles and I've a few choices, however I wasn't sure whether it was safe to have different brands fornt and rear. I know it's not safe to have separate brands on the same axle. I've been searching through posts on here and it seems that a good alternative to the Michelins are the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s, but the tread pattern is significantly different.... .... so wasn't sure if this would cause an issue. Looking at the costs it'll be approx: £248 for 2 x Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 £335 for 2 x Michelin Pilot Sport 2 (Extra Load) Is it worth spending the extra £87 (approx) on the michelins? I've not had any problems with michelins and have run these for approx 25k miles, but just trying to justify the extra cost. I know all about the saying that they are the things that keep you on the road, but it's not like the goodyears are budget tyres!! Thanks for any help! AZURES3
Both seem to be great tyre but that Goodyear tyre has been superseded now by this and it seems to be getting very good reviews. Eagle F1AS I never liked the tread patteren of the old one but respected its performance and price. The new one will be my first choice for the S3 when they need doing in about 200 miles. NickHodgson
cheers for the posts so far. AZ, do you know of anywhere that stocks the F1AS ? I've had a google, but can't find anywhere yet.
NickHodgson
Reply from Black Circles "Unfortunately we do not have any of the good year asymmetric tyres available at the moment. They have just been delivered to Goodyear and may take a week or so to get to us to get out to you. I have a price of £134.83 per tyre fully fitted if you would like to order these" Doesn't seem too bad and the tread pattern would be more like the michellin (judging by the Goodyear photos) so that would look better! THink I'll keep an eye on the Black circles site and unless there are any other comments on here then I'll get them ordered through quidco for 5% cashback !! MrAvant
AudiMini, I am in the exactly same spot as you but i have contis on the rear. I have been looking at the Goodyear GSDs and probably get them from Event tyres but it looks like they are the same price you have been quoted. AUD1
[ QUOTE ] With 2WD you are fine. [/ QUOTE ] Why do you say that, I have different brand tyres on the front and back of my R32 I think you might be getting mixed up with different tyre size on a 4 wheel drive car. If your going for the F1's then put them on the back and have the better tyre on the front so it will get rid of some of the understeer that the heavy engined Audi's have. MattS3
The good year asymmetric tyres are excellent. They also did very well in the recent EVO tyre test (they won it) I managed to get 4 thru a motorsport contact for £45 each (+VAT) which made them even more of a bargain too
gizze
Mixing tyres on any car is not fine imho, just read the amount of posts on the BMW forums that start off "may car is feeling very twitchy and I don't know what is wrong." This is always followed by.. "I bet you have different tyres on different axles?" Answer is always a yes and then a week later you hear them raving on how much the ride has improved and how much more planted the car is now all tyres are matched. NickHodgson
[ QUOTE ] There can only be one.............. Michelin [/ QUOTE ] I agree that Michelin have been good for me, but do you know from experience that the Goodyear F1s aren't any good? If not then your comment wasn't much use... sorry don't mean that in a nasty way, it just doesn't help to justify my decision

Could it just be because they are BMW drivers Seriously though it does sound concerning that mixing tyres could cause issues. Wonder if it's worth checking what Audi say. maersk
Michelin wear very well, are much, much quieter in use and grip better in the dry. Wet grip is not quite as good as G F1. Actually wear is significantly better..................... I would go with them always.
gizze
The new Goodyear Asymmetrical is a complete copy of the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 but using a slightly softer compound, some of the guys who track their CSL's have been using them and been very impressed, slightly more grip than the PS2 but with that same progressive break away that makes it very easy to tell when the grip is going to go, unlike the GDS3's, which when they let go they really let go!! NickHodgson
cheers gizze. I presume if they're softer then they'll wear quicker than the michelins?
MrAvant
When did life become so complicated that we have to go through so much just to choose tyres. I remember when i got my first car.....(many years ago), i would look for the cheapest tyre i could find..
NickHodgson
When you're transporting the misus and 15month old around things take a different perspective and you start craving safety. I remember when I used to drive up the M62 over the penines to Leeds (before I moved up) in a classic mini on cold winter friday and sunday nights, didn't feel unsafe getting blown about by lorries for 100 miles!! Ah, those were the days
MrAvant
You are absolutely right. As soon as you got the misus and the little one then safety becomes number one.
gizze
I would guess they would wear quicker yeah?? Peronally I really like the Falken FK452's I got 4 fitted for £300 as well last time which is awesome, another favourite with a few of the M3 guys. jwo
Some of the F1AS have higher load ratings than the equivalent tyre they are replacing - this may affect handling etc. (and also not to manufacturer's spec on load rating). Just check it out first!
