Hi folks.

I'll post a proper review after a few more miles, but the mid range torque and the pick up reminds me of my E39 M5.

Seriously impressive - and it even makes a nice noise. Blackheath back to Guildford - starting in stop start, and then between 60-XXX on the way back I averaged 38mpg!

Very impressed so far.

That's all that needs to be said mate! 169144-ok.gif

The 335d is the best all round car on the market right now I reckon.

Economy, decent tax bracket and seriously quick out of the box. Remap it and it becomes an animal, a refined animal but and animal none the less.

Thanks!

Well, we drove down to the west country and back today to look at wedding venues. Have had to set a speed warning at 100mph. lol.

I'll get the (minor) gripe out of the way first:

iDrive. I'm quite a tech savy person (I like to think), and like my gadgets. It is fair to say that iDrive is not instantly intuative, and takes some time to get used to. I cant imagine tech-phobic people (like my parents) getting on with it at all. After a day I would say I am more or less there, and the voice control works quite well too. But it is not so easy to just jump in an use as Audi's MMi.

I also dont find the paddles that intuitive. I like the fact that you can change up or down with either hand, but like iDrive it takes a while to get used to thumbs for down, fingers for up. (stop sniggering at the back!)

The pro's:

Aesthetically, I think the coupe is much more resolved as a shape than the saloon. My car isnt an M sport, but I think it is purposful enough. It's Sparkling Graphite - the car was used so I didnt choose it, but I am pleased with it. It needs a proper detail as the paint is rough to the touch from contaminants..

The interior is Black leather and I really like it. I especially like the "handover" system that presents the seatbelt. Makes me chuckle, and I even say thanks. The M sport seats are extremely comfortable and very adjustable. Even the side boslters can be adjusted to suit your frame.

We did about 150 miles today, and despite messing about and having some fun, saw an average of 37.1mpg according to the OBC, which I think is exceptional. I'm sure over 40mpg could be achieved on a long run without any trouble. Compare that to the 320i that averaged 34pmg in the time that I had it and 44mpg for the 320d, and I think you have to agree that is pretty impressive for a 286bhp car that is only a second or so of the M3 to 60!

In gear, and mid range acceleration is exceptional, and pickup just as great. I'd compare the flexibility to the E39 M5 I used to own. In fact I just looked it up - that had a not insignificant 368lb of torque from 3,800. The 335d is 425lb from 1,750!

The bonus I wasnt expecting is it even makes quite a nice noise. I cant quite put my finger on what it sound like when pressing on, but I liken it to a cross between a straight 6 and a v8... At tick over and cruise it is quiet as a mouse. You would only know it was a diesel for a couple of seconds when it starts.

Finally, useful for those of you with BMW Nav. I have just found out that you can download/modify the POI information on the Navigation disc to include camera info. You can either "hack the DVD" yourself following instructions from various sites, or just do what I did and download a map disc already done for you. As I already have the 2008-1 dvd from the dealer, I download the 2008-1 Europe DVD (search google) including the Europe POI and I know have the camera data too!

I'll post up some better pics once I have given it a proper clean!

Ed.

Hi John,

Someone (cleverer than me) has worked out how to hack the DVD and add to the POI (points of interest) database which has hotels, petrol stations etc, and add the camera/frequently used mobile locations. Once you look for nearby poi's on the Nav system they then all show on the map. So presto you have a camera icon for every camera etc. There are sites showing how to do it yourself (looked hard work to me!), or you can download a torrent where someone has done the work. (assuming you have the equivelant BMW disk already). I downloaded it and burnt to a DVD-RW, and it worked a treat (updated the NAV os also).

That looks the business ED.

I sometimes wonder if I should have gone for the coupe rather than the 5.

Sure it'll keep you ammused for a while... and a remap (which I'm about to sort) will keep it going further should you need a bit more.

Have heard about the POI DVD hack on E60.net, but you don't get an audioble warning, just visual in the iDrive dispay, so not bothered (I need a siren to remind me!)

Thanks. Trying to talk myself out of going to DMS (in Southampton near where I work). Mainly as I dont want to pay extra insurance (I would not risk not delcaring it), and so far feel it is plenty quick enough!

Know what you mean about the warnings. I have a Snooper indago that does that, but of course dont need the navigation and hate having things stuck to the screen..

May go back to a micro road piot or similar.

KWYM, I have a RoadAngel Compact, but hate it on the dash, so going back to a Micro Road Pilot... just wish the screen was amber and not green.

eMaps are probably going to be doing mine... and another 'mates' 535d.
