Muppetboy
Has anyone installed the new Apple Touch software, is it worth buying? I'm a bit miffed that Apple are charging £12.99 for this update given that I only bought my Touch in November!
Ritey
I'm not sure about whether the download is worth it, but this is more than just a 12.99 download from Apple IMO. They are trialing a way of distributing apps through the itunes store, that are compatible to ipods and the iphone, if its successful I can see a whole host of apps appearing as pay per app downloads which could be more successful than the traditional way of buying through the store or in a shop
Mac
I have it and in my opinion it's worth it It's given me the only features I missed from the iPhone I binned. As a side note, don't download it for a few hours yet as there's problems with the download causing the installs to fail.... Essentially you'll have to restore your pod and change it's name for the update to take properly. Give it a couple of hours will be back to being all good
Rachel
I had no problems - but they wanted $24.95 for it here... I checked my credit card this morning to see if the transaction went through, only to find that they had billed m for $3.38! Result! I wonder how long that authorisation will hang around. The e-mail client is excellent - was thrashing it across my 6 accounts last night. very easy to use, and quite a lot of detailed configuration if you want to fiddle with the settings. The Google Maps route finder is also pretty slick, but travel time estimates seem a bit off (long) - so I'm not sure what speeds they use to calculate those. bazza_g
I've downloaded it to my ipod touch and managed to rent my first movie - also paid $20 instead of £12 using my iTunes USA account the hardest part was upgrading to itunes 7.6 which seemed to take forever to install... drpellypo
Is this any different to jailbreaking? Cos I already did that, and it cost me nowt!
Mac
One of the things I find odd is the willingness with which I buy Apple stuff Software, bits etc. You just *do it* - it's a bit odd compared to the Windows world.
bpsmith
I totally agree with you there! Whenever something new is out I just have to get it. Have held back on the iPhone as got a works contract on a different network but would have enjoyed the Wi-Fi for the Mail, so might now go for a Touch quite possibly? You get the update free with the new one's though so agree the above could well be a trial for better things...
Ritey
It's what Job's argues about, specially with movie rental and the price. The competition for downloading anything, is how easy it is offset by the cost. If you make it the right price, and available to download, most people will because its easy and legal, but if you do what the movie people want to do, ie charge the normal price for dvd's for example for a rental your going to loose out to the torrents even though its more hassle your saving money. Better to have a small % of something than a large % of nothing, so make it easy to get at the right price and people will, itunes the success story
bpsmith
As it happens, I have had a total revamp of my ethos since getting the Mac 18 months ago. Just because everything works as it should, I tend to feel so much better about buying stuff rather than downloading! I have a totally legal setup on both iMac and the MacBook and dont download or copy any Music, Films or Games anymore! Absolutely no point when it is so simple to get via iTunes, or buy online via Play.com or the likes. When I had a PC, I had nearly everything unofficially and felt nothing about flaunting it either, just like nearly all PC users!?! I even bought Leopard on pre-order to receive it on the first day, which is a real first! So I think Jobs is getting it spot on personally, as he has easily helped me part with the cash for the following: Intel iMac (White) Intel MacBook (Latest White Mid Range Model) Leopard iLife 08 Even plumped for iWork 08 too, which rocks! Plenty spent in the iTunes store too...

[/ QUOTE ] Yep. Today saw the Mac Mini driving (via DVD-DVI) my 32" NEC LCD get a new Iomega MiniMax 500GB drive to sit on top of the existing MiniMax 250GB... EyeTV (digital HD TV), VLC, the new iTunes and QuickTime now drive a neat, compact and powerful home media centre. A little aluminium stack of white and blue LEDs. bpsmith
Very nice indeed! People complained about the Mini not being too upgradeable and stuff but totally missed the boat with regards to the power of it for such a small footprint! Just imagining that lot in my lounge... CharleyBuoy
I've jailbroke mine. Here's a screenshot: It have a VOIP app much like skype. It has mail and all the other 4 apps including stocks etc.. And there are the themes also. It seems you get more by jailbreaking it than paying for the upgrade. [/ QUOTE ] Any chance of an idiots guide as to what is involved to jailbreak one? Cheers, Jon. [/ QUOTE ] If you are on firmware 1.1.1 then you just go to www.jailbreakme.com If you update you lose the jailbreak thing unless you install a prep that comes with the jailbreak and you use a programme called touchfree to jailbeak again whilst on 1.1.2. If you are 1.1.2 then you will have to downgrade. You do this in iTunes by holding shift and clicking update then choosing a copy of 1.1.1 firmware. (PM Me if you want this.) If you are on 1.1.3 you can jailbreak but it's complicated. I will post some links soon incase you are. Once you have jailbroke an app will pop up on the springboard called "Installer" this is like a directory of apps and you touch to install them.
