brycey
Folks, I'm in a pickle. I badly need rid of my Mk5 GTI (due to high mileage) and have my eye on an R32, but I can't help feeling this might be the worst possible time to buy one with the Mk6 around the corner! I know there's various topics on this but what's everyone's thoughts on when we'll see the Mk6 GTIs and R32s, and will that mean brutal residuals for an 08 plate Mk5 if I take the plunge? Cheers

brycey
Unfortunately car allowance policy means four or five door only, or I'd have a deposit down by now.
mlhj83
Unless VW decides to release the rumoured limited-run high performance Mk5 Golf as the last of the Mk5 line up, you will be waiting quite a while for the next high performance Mk6. Put it this way, the Scirocco which has just been officially unveiled, will only go on sale towards the end of this year. But the Mk6 is no where near the production status of the Scirocco, therefore, if the Mk6 were to be unveiled in late 2008 or early 2009, it'll be at least a year after sales of the Mk6 starts before any high performance version Mk6 goes on sale. If you really can't wait, then a used Mk5 R32 will make the best financial sense for obvious reasons.
Mook
It's a buyers market at the minute, so you'd get a used Mk5 R32 for decent money. Not sure what it'll be like come resale time, but the worst case would be that you'd lose £12-15K in 3 years. You could buy a brand new Mondeo and lose more than that! brycey
Cheers for the advice folks, you're pretty much confirming what I thought. When you say "rumoured high performance mk5" do you mean the mystical R36, or has been talk of something else?Bizzarely I had this preminition the other night of a Mk5 Rallye with 4WD and the new 2.5T soon to appear in the Audi TTRS in it - now that would do the job! mlhj83
Your guess is as good as mine, nobody knows for sure when/if the rumoured high performance Mk5 will be released and neither does anybody know what engine it will be using. Until hard legitimate evidence surfaces, anybody who states otherwise, who isn't somehow involved in the project, clearly does not know what they are going on about. Mook
I saw that advertised in the paper. Limited run and it uses the latest gen Haldex system But it's a Vectra in a different body...

mlhj83
An Audi S3 8P. Stealthy, easy to tune and slightly cheaper to run than an R32. Albeit a less involving drive Plus there won't be a new generation for a good couple of years at least.

mlhj83
[ QUOTE ] A3 is facelifted in June [/ QUOTE ] I was referring to the S3, which I believe won't be affected by the facelift since it has it's own body kit. Plus an update to the S3 wasn't listed on that leaked Audi document.
Nelson_R32
I'm afraid it will be affected Hence the reason I bought an R32 as thats not revamped until early 2009. It will be uprated to 270bhp, offer a Sportback variant, have LED running lights and no doubt a few tweaks which will make you wish you'd waited for the facelift version!
