Basic POS solution, possibly open source

Hi All,

I have a friend who has just taken over a take away but the infrastructure he inherited is antiquated to say the least. It is currently running on Dbase3 between 2 computers where they are syncing the files via floppies wtf?

Anyway, I have managed to extract the data and document for them how to change prices etc but what they currently have is hanging by a thread and they have asked me to help out.

I have years of windows\networking experience but for their current requirements they need something cheap and reliable.

Spec as follows:

2 pc's out front, touch screen is not an option due to the theft risk as no in a great area.

Receipt printer on the front desk

Receipt printer in the kitchen, prob a 10M cable run to print in parallel.

Currently they have around 200 menu items which will not really increase by more or less than 5% pa.

Current process is that the customer calls up and gives phone number which is entered into the db which then returns the customer record if it exists. The order is then entered by menu number, submitted and printed on both printers.

Any suggestions or pointers would be very much welcomed, the replication, connectivity etc is not an issue but would love some pointers as to simple windows based solutions.

I have forewarned them that they will have to replace the pc's and most likely the printers too as they are way old.

TIA,

Jon.

Having worked in the EPOS sector for many years... all I can say is that it isnt cheap unless you can source the hardware direct from the manufacturers.

I would recommend the Epson TM-88 Termal Printers... very robust.

Till rolls from MHG Supplies in Sheffield.... 169144-ok.gif

EPOS software can run on normal PC`s..... so why not just get a couple of basic pc`s.... TM88`s can connect via a COM port or RJ45 if required.....

And then buy the EPOS software from the web to suite.

Sorry I cant be of much help given that im in this sector...

How cheap?

I haven't dealt with these solutions (we have Micros on site, installed last year and sadly all our old kit just got flogged off) but they seem reasonable value for money.

Another 169144-ok.gif for Epson TMT88, great little receipt printers however, they are thermal and if the kitchen is hot you'll need to be looking for a normal matrix printer in there instead.
