Nelson_R32
Right, when I ordered the R32 I decided I would do something I'd never normally do and order £1850's worth of Satellite Navigation System. The Price list (still) reads as follows; [ QUOTE ] DVD touch-screen With 61⁄2" colour touch-screen – DVD based route planning and navigation/radio system 1, 2 guidance with live traffic updates, multifunction computer (Highline), and 6 CD autochanger 30 GB hard drive, SD card reader, MP3, WMA and DVD video data files compatibility, AUX-in socket for connection to external multimedia sources (e.g. iPod and USB), front centre armrest with storage compartment, two rear air vents, cup holders and armrest-mounted 6 CD autochanger [/ QUOTE ] Brilliant, I thought A 30GB Hard Drive means I can transfer my 700+CD's I have in my spare room onto my car I have just started to put the music onto my car via SD Card and it turns out that it actually only has 18.6GB on the system. After asking the question on the vwnavi forums it turns out that 12GB is used for the Satellite Navigation System (!!) Does anyone else feel this is ludicrious? Why tell you it has a 30GB Hard Drive when nearly half of it is already in use before you've even collected it? So basically, my only option is to order an iPod and play the music via AUX-In; I don't want to do this as it will cost me another £150.00 to buy and iPod and it won't charge So, should I complain to VW UK? Ultimately I would like a refund towards the cost of the option, but not sure whether thats being too optimistic?
edo
I think that is very misleading - esp as it is "DVD" Navigation... I'd be comlpaining about that, and asking what trading standards think.

CarMad
18Gb is still a fair bit to store music on but it should say that less than a third of it is actually usable. I'd certainly complain about it though.
Biscuits
I'd also complain, as like edowen mentioned it says "DVD Navigation". Is there anyway to upgrade the HDD? I would have thought it could be... I hate it when the little things spoil a new car experience...

shark_90
I personally don't see it as a problem. The spec said that it has a 30Gb HDD not that 30Gb was useable. The Pioneer units are similar in this respect. I also can't see how your "only option" is to buy an iPod and have your music on that etc.. and if I were a customer service guy taking the call I'd certainly be marking you down as "trying to pull a fast one"
Durrsaku
I still think that is misleading though.
Luke
I think i'd start enjoying the performance of the car rather than if the hard drive can hold 700 cds or 500 cds. Lets face it 500 cds at an average of say 12 tracks per cd is a lot of music. Remeber when 1 cd in the dash was flash?!! Wait until the budget then you can start to moan, £1500 per year maybe for the big engine cars
Nelson_R32
Well I think it's unfair for Customers to 'assume' that because I'm being offered a 30GB Hard Drive that I would only have access to 18GB. After all not everyone is an ICE expert like yourself It's no better than saying in a Brochure 'This car has 400HP' then when you get the car them saying 'Well, we've actually changed it to 250bhp because we can't trust you with it, sorry!!' If I were to be totally honest it's more the financial aspect of it thats pissed me off, but I don't see why I shouldn't be annoyed about it. £1850 is allot of money to spend on a Satellite Navigation system, after all I could've got a decent Tom Tom for £
Luke
I dont think I'd buy another sat nav system unless the car required it for resale. A tomtom wide screen can be had for £150 off amazon and are a great bit of kit. Dont most computer companies use the same line, 100 gb but after all the preloaded stuff its more like 80-90?? I don't see anyone kicking up a stink about that issue, just accepting the fact that the car has in fact got 400bhp (30Gig hard drive) but the amount available is 350bhp (18Gig). It's misleading to a certain degree, but it's factually correct.

Sparky
At the end of the day, VW aren't going to put a larger hard disk in there, so there's little point in complaining really.
cruiser647
You could complain, but they just point you to the label on the hard disc saying 30Gb.
garcon magnifique
You're not going to get your 30Gb, but if you have a word with the sales manager along the lines that you think the sales blurb is misleading (and that you have toldVW UK as much) then you might get something as a goodwill gesture. gizze
Hold on, how do you transfer the music onto the hard drive?? Surely there must be a removable caddy or something so you can drap your mp3's onto it?? Can't you just clone this and put say a 300gig drive in there? craigyb
Lets face it, a 30GB disk is only about 26GB formatted capacity anyways. I but 1TB disks, but only get 975GB before formatting. Also SKY+ nicks disk space, so does SKY HD for housekeeping etc. But I'm not complaining to sky about it. Like mentioned, if the brochure said 30GB available for your Abba collection sir, then I would complain. But it doesn't, it's just like any marketing hype, quote the best thing you can get away with.
