MattS3
I'd like to change the oil and filter myself between AVS intervals. I have access to an inspection pit at my parents property, so just a case of getting the required parts and doing the job. Oil - Easy. I can obtain Edge from Halfords Filter - Does anyone have a part number for a B6 S4. Ideally I'll be able to collect one from VW if its a generic filter, which saves me a trip out of town to Audi. Process - Ive found this http://www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Number=1144758 and I would assume that the S4 is similar, but does anyone know if it is please? Many thanks Matt
Mook
I'' find out the part number for the filter for you - my oil and filter are being changed today The drain plug on the S4 is in a slightly different place to the RS4 pic Daz has posted. Make sure you get a copper washer and DON'T over-tighten the drain plug
Longdog
Can't help you with the part number but, with regards to buying your oil at halfrauds, have you checked ebay recently ? 8 litres of castrol edge 5-30w for £40 plus £5 p&p, I used this seller for my last service and got very good service as well as a good saving. I think this link should work. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Castrol-Edge-5-30-...1QQcmdZViewItem
Mook
Buy oil off eBay You can get it cheaper than that at Opie Oils www.opieoils.co.uk They're also members of Tyresmoke, so nice to keep it in the family Welcome to Tyresmoke, BTW, Longdog ++
Longdog
Thanks for the welcome, I have been a fan of this site for a while so thought i'd get a bit more involved. Agree it is "nice to keep it in the family" but 4 litres at Opie is nearly £40 whereas ebay the price was for 8 litres.
Mook
TBH, I would just steer well clear of buying anything that your car depends on off of eBay - there is a massive amount of fake stuff around. I guess you just need to ask how they can offer twice the amount of oil for the same price - even wholesalers don't make that much money from oil! MattS3
Cheers for all the replies folks. Spoke to VW and it isn't a filter they stock, so will have to order from Audi. They have them in stock so can get one before the weekend. The sump plug is generic, and I have one of those kicking around from my S3 anyway. Oil I'll get from Halfords as I doubt Opie can get it to me for Sat morning. As for ebay, as already said, I think there is far too much counterfeit stuff kicking around on there for the sake of saving a tenner so would rather not take the chance. MattS3
Mook - Do you know how much oil they needed? I've had reports of 7 litres on the Opie site, to 10 litres when I looked at the RS4 thread. i've bought 8 litres now think I may be short
EssFour
8 won't be enough. your looking at about 9-10 litres. Changed my oil and filter at the start of the year and it took about 9.5ltrs to fill her up.
spikeyboy
is it not in your hand book - from memory thought the S4 took 9 ltrs
MattS3
I'll take a look at the book in the morning, but will get 2 litres to be on the safe side. I can use the half litre left for top ups
Mook
S4 requires 9 litres
MattS3
Cheers guys. The book said 9, but not sure if that included the filter so got 10 litres. It took 9 and a bit so have plenty left for top ups. Bar getting the undertray off, it was the easiest oil change I've ever done. The top cover on the engine at the back just pulls off, and the filter sits there looking at you
Mook
Yup, I ended up buying 3 x 4 litres - 9 for the change then some left over for top-ups
