Diesel Engines

Hi guys,

I am looking at selling my 2001 A4 soon (petrol version) as i need an estate (To cart my dog about) and also thinking of a diesel as i dont really rate the 2.0 engine so much.

Anyway my problem is, after i have sold mine i wont have that much to put towards another one, so i reckon in total i will have about 8k to spend on an A4 Avant, ideally a diesel.

I have looked on autotrader, ebay and pistonheads and a lot of these 1.9TDi's seem to be up on miles, most seem upwards of 100k.

SO how good are these engines for this sort of miles? anything in particular to watch out for with the high milers? More to the point, what does the rest of the car wear like? Am i to expect more bills as stuff goes wrong?

I have never bought a high mileage car before but due to a lack of funds and not liking any other estates for that money i may have to this time.

Any advice would be great guys - Cheers

I bought a 1.9TDi A4 (2001) with 100,800 miles on it and sold it with 158,000 on it just over a year later and didn't have any major mechanical problems with it. It drove like new with no wear on the seats or anything. Even on the original clutch (and I remapped it).

My current Bora has 118,000 on it with the same engine (PD130). It's just not an issue.

Hi, a neewbie here I bought a 02 A4 Advant 1.9tdi(PD130) quattro sport about a month ago with 109k on the clock and have to say to me it drives like new, and next month I intend having a remap done on it. I think you have to remember a diesel engine has a much longer life cycle than a petrol engine. I have of course replaced the cam belt and water pump as a matter of course. The car cost me just over £8k. Hope this is of help to you.

S reg A4 1.9Tdi here, with 125K miles on the clock and never misses a beat (again, touch wood). And here's the famous Fifth Gear used car buyer top tip "make sure you get one with a full service history" and get some money knocked off if it's approaching a cambelt change.

Sold my 2002 A4 Avant PD130 in August last year with 120K on the clock. Only problem was a split fuel pipe early in it's life. Always serviced on the button, by Audi up to warranty expiration then by independent. Interior was as new and Atlas Grey bodywork in excellent condition. Engine still returned 50-55mpg on the regular run to SW France.
