Muppetboy
I'm moving into my new place soon and plan to spend some cash upgrading my AV by installing surround sound and buying a Blu Ray player. I'm getting a Panasonic DMP-BD30 when they eventually come into stock to replace my 6 year old Sony NS300 DVD player Speakers will be courtesy of Bose Acoustimass 10, I know Bose is often seen as overpriced tosh but they do a good job imo and they look inoffensive. (And they have great after care support) Driving this little lot will be an Onkyo TXSR605, which I've seen recommended on here and other forums, to which I will also connect my xbox 360 and cable set top box. Now for the questions... Does this sound like a reasonable setup, or are there better things to be had for less money? Will I need to buy cables to connect the stuff to the Onkyo, or will they come with the BD player etc? (Now for the biggie) Are there any guides online of how to install concealed wiring? I'll only need this for the rear speakers, as the TV wont be wall mounted, which will mean lifting up the wood floor, going behind the skirting board and making a mess of the wall. Is it just a matter of using conduit under the floor and then up the wall? Any regulations that need to be adhered to? Any advice will be appreciated muchly
Riz
Sounds pretty good to me When you need a new screen I feel its worth giving the new wave of panasonic plasma`s a look.... 800 series due out this year. Riz
Chav
Sorry the BOSE acoustimass is crap. You can get 10 times the sound, for a quarter of the price if you buy proper speakers. I can never understand these surround sound jobbies with tiny speakers - they all sound shite. People always say how good they are - until they hear the sound from some normal sized speakers! In any case, the bose surround setups are far from the best. Personally, I'd have full size floor standers for the front and rear, and a good sized centre. although rear can be just smaller ones I guess - but I can usually tell where the bass is coming from (direction is not as noticeable for bass, but you can tell) Receiver is quite nice - but you wont benefit from it fully with the bose speakers. dont worry about spending too much on speaker cable - its mostly bull - as long as its quite thick though, it'll be fine (not too much loss over long runs) you can get hollow skirting or wood quadrant if you dont want to trash the walls. How about some 2nd hand speakers? B&W? there was a set going in the Market Place. Riz

Muppetboy
Typical... so what are these speakers that cost a quarter of Bose, yet have ten times the sound quality?
gizze
The only small sub/sat system (I am talking Bose size) that I would even consider, is the Anthony Gallo Nucleus Micro system. They are £125 a speaker and the TR-1 Sub is around £250, but extremely nice sounding system that also looks the tits. http://www.stoneaudio.co.uk/
gizze
The other system if you can go a little bigger is the Quad Lite system, very nice too, and seen it being advertised for around £700 including the sub.

bells0
I've got the Kef Eggs + SUB [KHT2005.2] and think they do a great job and are pretty discrete. Think they have just been updated again too [KHT3005]. Bout £
simkna
I'm with Riz, whenever I'm round at mates houses with their Kef Eggs, or Bose systems, I miss the mid-bottom range of my full size speakers with sub. Si.
Muppetboy
I picked up my Panasonic BD30 today and I'm really impressed Casino Royale looks awesome on Blu Ray and upscaling of SD DVD's looks pretty good despite lots of reports to the contrary. I've always been slightly disappointed with my LG LCD due to slight ghosting, but feck me it projects HD awesomely
Muppetboy
I hear the TX-SR606 is out in April and apparently upscales and has more HDMI ports, so I may as well wait a few weeks as it will be one less thing to pack up Ordered a brochure for the Nucleus Micro system from Anthony Gallo, and will try to get a demo somewhere soon. Had a demo of a Bose 38 Lifestyle thingy at Comet and I thought it sounded awesome, although my hearing isn't great so perhaps that's why I rate it higher than other people
Muppetboy
I'm not much of one for buying second hand stuff (but I'm trying to change ) yet I've seen these on Ebay and thought it might be worth a shot. As a newbie to surround sound, would I just need speaker cable and a sub to connect these babies to? I'm just trying to work out the actual overall package cost. Thanks MB
gizze
Yeah you would need cable and a sub, doesn't have to be the Gallo sub either, but get a half decent one.
simkna
I can heartily reccomend one of these babies.. BK Sub Si.
Muppetboy
To be honest I'd probably just go with the Gallo sub... need to see if I can get a demo of the speakers at a dealer before the auction ends. Quite exciting stuff this AV stuff... ps Onkyo UK emailed me back to say they will have details of the SR606 in the second week of April
gizze
The BK sub above at £289 is better than the Gallo sub at £500, and smaller, it is a hell of a lot better than the Gallo £300 sub.
