Going to Somerset tomorrow and might buy a early 07 one (not likely to be the new 177 engine), ex BMW UK.

What they like and what sort of real mpg do they return.

I'll be working in Edinburgh on and off for a few months and since the weekly commute is about 850 miles I need something that can return 40+ mpg and 80+ mph.

Anything to look out for regarding faults and snags confused.gif

Still looking for a 330d as well, but that can wait till the end of summer now.

My partners '06 120d SE (manual) did around 40k miles in 18 months and averaged 42mpg. This was on a mix of fastish A/B roads, but with some motorway use, which I though was pretty poor tbh. Even on a long motorway run @ 80mph it'd struggle to reach the high 40s, and it never cracked 50mpg in its time with us, which I thought was disappointing, but should meet your requirements grin.gif

Reliability was OK, though it had 3 trips to the dealer on top of the scheduled services (1 at 19k miles, one at 36k miles); two for DSC/ABS issues (warning light kept coming on) and one for a rattle in the dash that, despite being looked at at each service as well never really went away, so worth checking those out

Apart from the dash rattle the car felt as solid on the day it left as when it arrived, and the interior looked as good as new. Pre facelift 1 series (as ours was) have some fairly unpleasant plastic door trims, and ours also had some pretty ropey upholstery - cloth centres and rubber effect bolsters EEK2.GIF Rather like a baseball, but with a less pronounced pimpled finish shocked.gif I missed that part of the order - the rest of the spec was fine; we had cruise, which was worth having, and a stereo upgrade to 'professional' which wasn't grin.gif

Other thoughts? The rear seats were cramped, and the doors felt extremely tinny. Paint finish was pretty poor too, so check for stonechips.

One of the reasons we got rid of it, apart from the rapid racking up of miles, was that it never felt that special a place to be. We got a pretty heavy discount, but even so it cost over £19k new, and it just didn't feel like £19k worth of car.

Cracking car to drive though, and quick too 169144-ok.gif

I had an auto and the mpg on the prefacelift autos was not brilliant, we got 32-36mpg.

However I loved that car and would say it is the best all round car I have owned, kept it for 18 months which is also the longest I have kept a car for.

I had the M-Sport with leather interior and it felt as nice as anything else I have owned, we had the Logic7 sound system which is also the best car stereo I have owned and made the £2k Alpine/Genesis/DLS system in teh other car seem like a waste of money, all round a superb car.

The only one quibble I had was the run flats, but put normal tyres on there for £300 and it was awesome afterwards, oh, and the MPG.

The new 177bhp cars will return 30% more in auto guise and about 20% more in manual guise, come resale will they be worth the difference they are now between pre facelift and post facelift? I doubt it. But, if you do 20k miles a year I would guess the extra would be clawed back in fuel costs alone.

Got one.......

Oct 06 with 5k miles 120d 5 door M Sport with BT and Comfort package. It's metallic grey ex BMW and cost £15,800 plus £600 buyers fee and £125 for it to be delivered from Somerset to North London.

I have a cunning plan to do 10k miles and swap it for a 177 variant.

Just out of interest, can they handle a remap and if so what does that give?

Hopefully that's enough of that ROLLEY~14.GIFSAUER0421.GIF

its got the diddy wheels on it!! change them grin.gif

Seriously though, nice car, good colour and spec and you will have no issue at resale 169144-ok.gif I have a 320d M-Sport, currently re-mapped to over 205bhp - they fly!! Its the handling on the M-Sports though - push them hard and the chassis comes to life. Grip grip grip grip, slight oversteer, hit the apex and go...... ECLIPSe.gif

I was thinking of a 1er, but they were too small for my requirements - good choice 169144-ok.gif

  • 1 month later...

Did London - Edinburgh, and (no surprise) Edinburgh - London last / this week.

The car did 421 miles in 5 hours and averaged 43.1 mpg going up (over night with free running roads).

On the way back it did 418 miles in 5 hours 45 and averaged 41.6 mpg (left at mid day and the gers supporters slowed me down).

Due to the economy of the car, no stops required and none taken, even if 5/ 6 hours is a long time without a air break and walkabout.

I'm seriously thinking of adding a Spider unit to increase performance and economy

And here's the plate on the car that no one likes, it's a bit chavy, but for £250 it was just meant as a jocular buy since the car is far from being pacey.
