swan7
[2001 - GOLF GT TDI 115 - 85k] Evening all, Got another stange problem with my Golf - this time the speedometer seems to have a mind of its own (seems to happen a lot with my car!). When idle or in motion, the speedometer needle jumps aound various mph (revs are constant) ie. when idle the needle moves quickly between 0-80mph or when driving at eg. 70mph, needle moves between 0-120mph. On occasion it just sticks at 0mph. So, any ideas on what causes this problem and more importantly, possible solutions (inc. parts/costs?). Cheers. shao_khan
My TT had a similar problem - that resulted in a new dash pod as they arent really fixable by joe public (audi do refurb them) - so it could be that as worse case scenario. Not sure on repair options - new dash pod from a scrappy?
S3Bangs
I had this happen once or twice on my S3, I traced the speed sensor clip on the engine mounting, undid/took it out, reseated it and that was it Can't say if this will work for you, but give it a try as your first port of call
swan7
Where is the 'speed sensor clip' on the Golf, and what does it look like? I am hoping this is something I can sort out myself, and would appreciate some guidance on what to do. Cheers.

Ok, on my R, I had a look and if you stand right in front of the engine bay, towards the rear right, i.e to the left of the airbox (I hope this makes sense as I dont have a pic) is a sort of empty space. Look down towards the engine block and you should see a small silvery heat resistant bit that covers the clip on the engine. You will need a small screwdriver to undo the clip, however, dont force it as you might break it. Just prise it. I'll try and find a pic to explain better if I can. S3Bangs
Ok..found this pic and put an arrow slightly above (about an arms length) where I found it on the r. I'm thinking yours would probably be in the same place Clip looks something like this
swan7
Thanks for the pic - will try it out. Not sure if this is related to the dody speedometer, but now the 'Please Refuel' warning light keeps coming on even though the tank is half-full and the roads are pretty flat ie. not on a tilt/camber. Seems to happen when changing gear or turning. Any ideas?
