A4 S-Line Tdi 170 Quattro Performance/Economy

Hi Everyone, I'm new on here, looking for advice.

I just bought an A4 2.0 Tdi 170 Quattro S-Line, and to be frank, I'm fairly dissapointed with both performance and Economy.

I had an A4 B6 1.9 Tdi 130 Quattro Sport before, and to be honest, I think it would blow the doors off my new one.

I drove an A3 170 Quattro, and performance was "aggressive" to say the least, but it had 6-7k miles on it and it's obviously a lighter car, but I put the performance of the new A4 down to having only 2k miles and being tight as it's new(ish...Nov 2007). 7k Miles now, and a trip from Aberdeen to Bristol and back, and it still feels tight, and "breathless" at motorway speeds when you accelerate. I'm concious of the lack of torque below 2000rpm, and I understand that this is a "feature" of the 170, but even at 2500rpm and above it never really feels like it gets into its stride. 4k rpm and it's all over.

My local garage owner (who bought my old 1.9 130) drove my new one today and agreed with me, as he's driven my old one, but unfortunately not a 170 B7 to compare. He thinks it may be the Air Mass sensor.

It just doesn't feel like 170Bhp

I'm guessing if it goes to the Audi dealer, there will be a "no fault found" report, as I can't really put my finger on the problem, its just a gut feeling.

Sorry for the long post, but any general advice? Anyone here with the same car have any comments about performance of the 170 in comparison with a B6 130 Tdi?

Oh and on the motorway drive to Bristol, only managed 38.5mpg average over 470 miles of fairly gentle (80 mph tops) driving.

Once again, sorry for war and peace.

Bill.

Normally when you feel something is not quite right, you tend to be right.

I would take it in to Audi and also take another car out to compare it.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I took another identical car out today, albeit at rush hour and just around the block, and as far as I can see, it pulled fairly strongly from about 1800 rpm. (The old PD130 would still kill it here!) Felt much stronger than mine, even around the block, so It's booked in to Audi to look at it.

I did a quick test going home, and 6th gear 60mph to 80 mph in my car took over 15 secs, much worse than this morning, so something very inconsistent going on.

As a final note, I don't know if this is normal (it certainly wasn't on my old one) it won't rev beyond 3000 rpm in neutral at standstill, but it will in gear and running.

Anyway, up to Audi now, and I'll see what they say.

If nothing is found, rolling road power run at £50 at a local workshop and see what it's producing.

Bill.

Something isn't right , my 170 was a big difference from my 140 especially up the gears third onwards, you do notice some lag but it is definitely faster.Economy in congested traffic is poor . Maybe now with fuel prices being what they are i think my 130 was much better, range per tank in 170, is 520-540 miles regularly , whereas if traffic is light 580-620 on a run.
