Been somewhat busy over the last 6 months, so have a few reviews to catch up on grin.gif On to the 1 series… 1.gifwink.gif

My partners recently departed '06 120d SE (manual) did around 40k miles in 18 months; it was chosen specifically to cover this kind of mileage on a mix of mainly fastish A and B roads. During its time with us it averaged 42mpg, which I though was pretty poor tbh frown.gif. Even on a long motorway run @ 80mph it'd struggle to reach the high 40s, and it never cracked 50mpg in its time with us, which I thought was disappointing.

Reliability was OK, though it had 3 trips to the dealer on top of the scheduled services (1 at 19k miles, one at 36k miles); two for DSC/ABS issues (warning light kept coming on) and one for a rattle in the dash that, despite being looked at at each service as well never really went away...

Apart from the dash rattle the car felt as solid on the day it left as when it arrived, and the interior looked as good as new. Pre facelift 1 series (as ours was) have some fairly unpleasant plastic door trims, and ours also had some pretty ropey upholstery - cloth centres and rubber effect bolsters blush.gif Rather like a baseball, but with a less pronounced pimpled finish... I missed that part of the order - the rest of the spec was fine; we had cruise, which was worth having, and a stereo upgrade to 'professional' which wasn't

Other thoughts? The rear seats were cramped, and the doors felt extremely tinny. Paint finish was pretty poor too, and ours suffered more than its fair share of collateral damage, with a number of car park scuffs and knocks picked up (and fixed) while we had it.

One of the reasons we got rid of it, apart from the rapid racking up of miles, was that it never felt that special a place to be. We got a pretty heavy discount, but even so it cost over £19k new, and it just didn't feel like £19k worth of car. Fortunately it didn’t actually cost that much (relative to the mileage); we sold it for £16k, so the 40,000 miles ‘cost’ £3,600 in depreciation in round numbers, or 9p per mile. Diesel cost another 12p per mile, with servicing/tyres/insurance and tax taking the total cost per mile to roughly 26p. Bodywork repairs added another 4p to that though smashfreakB.gif

Cracking car to drive though, and quick too

Its hard to say for sure without comparing in identical situations - the effciency of the newer twin turbo (one small, one large) means that the 35d engine just doesnt have to work that hard to make good progress.

I'm sure the newer 20d and 23d engines are better.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised cool.gif; needless to say that was for a private sale (to a colleague of my partner); BMW offered £13,500 yelrotflmao.gif Mind you, to be fair to them, they did have more 1 series on their forecourt than they knew what to do with grin.gif I also tried 'webuyanycar' (or something like that...); they offered £15k...

The car had a list price of around £22k though IIRC, so assuming we'd been silly enough to pay list and then sell back to the dealer we'd have lost £8,500 blush.gif

WRT to the fuel consumption, the my main comparator is a B6 A4 Avant TDI 130 I'd had a few years ago; that was used on similar roads and for a similar mileage. Despite being completely thrashed by me, and being a larger car, that averaged around 46mpg. Every other BMW diesel I've had has been an auto, and needless to say 42mpg was only a dream in them grin.gif

dont understand how the 335d car is giving over 40mpg and the 120d just over 40, surely something wrong with the 2 litre diesel

[/ QUOTE ]

For comparison I also had a 535d Touring a couple of years ago; that averaged 28.2mpg blush.gif It would do high thirties on a motorway run, but on A/B roads it was too tempting to put my foot down ECLIPSe.gif

It's an interesting point though, showing just how much prices have dropped now that there are more cars on the market. When we sold ours (late summer '07) most of the used ones were 6 - 9 month old ex BMW or dealer cars; there were very few cars over a year old. Therefore when comparing dealer prices (which is what the person who bought ours was doing), most used cars were more expensive than ours...

I guess the early cars ('54 plate) had not reached the end of their two year leases/PCPs then; now that there are a lot of cars between 2 and 3 years old on the market, prices seem much cheaper; there are a few (petrol) ones on autotrader now for under £8k!!
