Gren
Okay, so I downloaded and installed Vista SP1. All seemed okay. Used Windows Update so assumed I was free from driver issues. Thing is the sound (Realtek) stopped working. So I opened up control panel to check out devices/drivers etc. Trouble is I ended up removing the 2 playback devices I had on there and now there is no sound, not even when the Windows emblem appears on boot up. Any ideas how to get it back? Am loathed to use System Restore as the only restore point I have is the pre-SP1 one so would have to spend a couple of hours or so sorting it out. I quite liked SP1 as it seemed to make my internet connection appear a lot quicker on boot up but I guess if I restore then I may just wait a solution to the sound thing. Edit : Sorted. There's a 'right click' context menu that allows you to re-instate them. Left the post here just in case it is of help to anyone else Still got the sound issue from SP1 though. Any solutions? Waylander
seen this posted elsewhere too about the realtek driver and an ATi gfx card; in both cases removing the device from device manager, rebooting so that Vista rediscovers it and loads the driver fixed it. Gren
I ended up looking on the Realtek site and found (would you believe it!) a set of drivers released on the same date as SP1. Loaded them up and all is well.

Figured the update might get rid of the odd gremlin I have with my sound....

Gren
Sorry I didn't answer in time. Yeah, just installed over the top. Pointed the install to the drivers I'd just downloaded and let it get on with its stuff. Just shows how useless the 'Search for drivers online' option in is Windows. It never found a thing, maybe it just searches MS sites? One thing though. On every boot, I get asked to okay the running of two files (it asks every time despite me unchecking the 'ask everytime' box). This first starts with RT.... and the second is, I think, SkyTel. They are part of the driver setup but does anyone know how I get them to run without me asking. I think its a certificate issue.
