[Audi A3/S3] Where is the air mass flow meter?

Hi,

My A3 is behaving very poorly... my unreliable mechanic thinks it's the air mass flow meter. But he never gets back to me about actually getting it fixed! I can't wait with a baby in the back with a dangerous car.

So I thought, maybe I'll go it alone as it's potentially something I can do myself.

I think I have a part number for my car model, but I need to check it with the one in my car. I stupidly have no Haynes Manual... can anyone PLEASE tell me where it is under the bonnet? Any photos with a big red rig around it?

Hi!

It all depends upon what engine you have. Turbo engines and TDi engines usually have MAF (Mass Air Flow) problems, and many other VAG engines can have Coil Pack issues (make the spark plugs spark at the right time). If the Coil Pack (or packs) go, then you get issues when you try to drive the car. Idling is usually OK, but try to move and it sounds like a bag of spanners and many lights on the dash appear!

The good news? Both of these issues are easy to sort.

Post up the year and engine size, and hopefully some-one will be able to help and post up some pictures for you.

I have sprayed carb cleaner onto the MAF element for 2 yrs with good results, before having to replace the MAF!

First off Welcome +++

My guess is that you have a 1.8T ;)

From memory of my old S3 the MAF is situated just along from the airbox on the right, you can disconnect it and run the car, if it runs better than normal then you know that your MAF is gone. It is something that you can change yourself without too much hassle.

The MAF is mounted on the exit from the airbox lid.

This pic, is my S3, an A3 will be similar arrangement but with a smaller MAF sensor.

You also wont have the Blue samco hose. ;)

That nice blue bit ... after the MAF ... wonder if they do one to fit my RS4 4.2 V8 ?

That pipe is a reinforced Samco Turbo intake pipe. I upgraded it along with my upper intercooler hoses, when i was having issues with intercooler hoses blowing off, and the odd boost leak.

The hose clips were also changed for JCS Marine grade stainless steel, for a more reliable clamp, that could be given some grief in tightening up. Helps to keep the boost in , and the pipes on!

I bought them specifically for the 1.8T S3 engine, and iirc it was from the TT Shop Bedford. as they had them in stock, but you should be able to get them from other tuners, like Forge motorsport / or APS etc. etc.

Samco also make universal bends and hoses that you can make your own kits up with, as well as their specific kits. They are also available in a wide range of colours. http://www.samcosport.com/home.asp
