gninnam
Evening gents. Picked up my new (to me!!) A8 last night and got to use her proper today and well pleased!!!!! For those who want to know: A8 4.2 QS 2000 X Reg Fully loaded 55K on the clock (backed up by paperwork) Silver (how unusual) Black interior, Fantastic to drive and so cool:D Just one question though - noticed that when driving (or stationary) but at low speed/revs, a faint 'whistle or whooshing' noise from the front (not sure if from engine or gearbox) Any ideas and doe it sound fatal? Will try and add some pics when I get time to do so. Cheers
harpersimon
wild stab in the dark but I am guessing people might say gearbox oil and filter.. quick!

Turn off the blower completely and see if the noise goes. If it does, then turn on the blower again, but put it on Econ, this runs the blowers but with the compressor off. Let us know the results, at 50K its unlikely to be the gearbox, but a good service from a gearbox specialist (not Audi!) is recommended.... Blower is easy change, A/C compressor is less easy, but not the end of the world.

Blower is easy change, A/C compressor is less easy, but not the end of the world. Well, just popped out to the car and took it for a short spin. came back to the carpark and did as you suggested. No blower, no sound. Blower on Econ, no sound. A/C on, sound. Therefore must be linked to the Aircon Compressor. Does this mean a new one or could it just be a dry belt or something? Where about is it housed in the engine bay and is it a possible DIY job? I had an AA check on the vehicle and this was never highlighted so do you think I have some comeback on them? Loads of questions so I appologies for this, but very new to this game of V8 monsters;)
Atomic
Relatively common fault unfortunately. From the reports i've seen most of the time it's cured by a compressor change.

Figure11
I've had that whine now for about 6K. I deal with by turning up the radio at low speads and road noise covers it at high speeds. It is a AC comp change and I will do it when it fails. A8Parts will have one I hope. Mike
