Dave
Chris Evans has spent over 5 millions pounds on a 250 GT California Spyder, and i have to agree with him.. it's beautiful! The auction house said Evans made a successful bid of 7,040,000 euros (£5,089,280), including buyer's premium, for the vehicle, which will take pride of place in his collection. The 1961 250 GT SWB California Spyder was once owned by Oscar-winning Hollywood actor James Coburn. http://news.sky.com/skynews/picture_gallery/0,,30400-1316465,00.html
cruiser647
James Coburn! Genius actor, always smiling in his films. Shame his bone joints couldn't take the pressure. As Flint he was ace. As Steiner he was excellent. He seems to be in a few roles now, and you can see his fingers are really stiff and the knuckles/joints bigger than normal. Is that the Ferris Bueller Ferrari? bullett
Is that the Ferris Bueller Ferrari? That was a fake wasn't it? but it was supposed to be the California. Lovely car.
Torino101
That was a fake wasn't it? but it was supposed to be the California.Lovely car. I hope so!! Especially as they trash it at the end of the film! Here you go: "Cameron's father's Ferrari wasn't a real Ferrari. Because it was too expensive to rent one, they made three fake ones with a fiberglass body." "When the Ferrari crashed, the fiberglass hood ripped, but branches were put over the rip to make sure the camera didn't record it." "The 1961 Ferrari GT250 was a modified MG sports car. The producers received several angry letters from car enthusiasts who believed the car shown was a *real* Ferrari and that it was actually wrecked in the film." Merlot
On his radio show, Chris Evans tries to present a pretty normal image and doesn't talk about the big wad he made a few years back. Spending £5m on a car in a very open way won't help his image with joe public.
cruiser647
Fair play to the man. He's worked hard for his cash, sold his businesses etc etc. I listen to his show every now and then and think it's a good show.
Dave
I agree.. I admire the man.. he obviously has talent and has worked his way to the top (and the bottom!) But he doesn't shout his wealth at anyone.. just getrs on with the job. I also think he's mellowed with age which is a good thing.
Brabus
Paying 5M for a car is pretty stupid though.
garcon magnifique
Paying 5M for a car is pretty stupid though. No it isn't. I'd happily spend £5m on a car if I had the kind of money Chris Evans does. And it's certainly not stupid when the car's WORTH that and more. And is the most beautiful car ever made. He can do what he wants with his money but when there is misery in China, Burma, Somalia etc there must be better ways of spending it. IMHO of course. garcon magnifique
Errr, the car was valued at less than half what he paid for it. True, but that was arguably an under-valuation based on difficult economic conditions ... and it will genuinely be worth what Evans paid before long - it certainly ain't gonna depreciate. He can spend his money as he wishes but when there is misery in China, Burma, Somalia etc there must be better ways of spending it. IMHO of course. So have you given up your car and all your luxuries to help those in misery? No? So why the feck should he? (And who's to say he doesn't already spend millions on worthy causes?) Unlikely. Credit crunch is far from over, oil price futures are soaring to 141 USD by 2016 along with general doom and gloom of the markets. I'd like to see any car appreciate from an estimated value of 2.5M GBP to over 5M in the next few years! As for my spending on luxuries and Chris Evans, we're not in the same league...but yes I do my bit where I can. Would rather see a headline reading Chris Evan sends 5m to help relief effort in China rather than paying twice the estimated price of a Fezza! garcon magnifique
I suspect Chris Evans would rather see that headline too. Cars like this aren't usually affected to badly by a recession. If anything, it just means it'll not change hands for a while longer.
Dave
Evans is worth around 230 million... 5 is small change really... Something is only ever worth what someone would pay for it.. would I pay 5 million for it?.. yes, if i could afford it. Chris Evans also does a LOT of charity work.. i don't begrudge him one iota. steelwind101
The car will only get older and no doubt in 10 or 15 yr time it will only be worth more!

bazza_g
The Rich List 2008 has Chris Evans at 'only' £45M - so that car represents quite a chunk of his wealth RESULTS FOR 2008Ranking: 1621= Worth: £45m Source of wealth: Media and property Now hosting Radio 2’s evening drive-time show, Evans, 42, found fame at the other end of the day, launching Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast in 1992. He set up a production company to make shows such as TFI Friday, and later joined Virgin Radio. In 1997 he led the £85m acquisition of the station. Three years later SMG bought his Ginger Media Group for £225m, earning Evans £75m in cash and shares, although he lost out on the full amount after being sacked for failing to turn up for his Virgin show. He has built up a property portfolio, including pubs, and lives with his third wife, a golfer and writer, in a £3.2m Surrey farmhouse. He has also invested in vintage cars. Vagabond
sorry Mr. Evans, but i find that amount of dough on a car totally disgusting and vulgar, given my current cash flow!!!
Merlot
Need to downgrade the R32 then?
Dave
Ok, I read this in the news Evans, can well afford the £5m he paid for the Spyder. In March 2000, his Ginger Media Group was sold to SMG plc for £285m. I just presumed he kept most of it.
CarMad
Good on him for buying it but I wonder if he will suffer if we get a bit of a depression. Classics went through the roof in the past and are only recovering to the highs now. But maybe he doesn't care and wants to own a classic Ferrari, its his choice after all and I don't begrudge him it one penny.
