New telly.

Looks like we might be in the market for a new telly. Currently have a 28" Samsung which is starting to misbehave a little, so we're going to need a new one soon I think. Requirements are:

  • No bigger than 32" and even this might be too big, so probably slightly less
  • We have Sky, but not HD anything so that's not important.
  • Must have good viewing angle so that it can be seen from all seats.
  • Budget around £350 or so.

Any recommendations?

We went and looked round Comet, and not a CRT to be seen matey. That pretty much narrows it down a little.

The trouble with Comet (and it happened again when we were there) is that you tend to get jumped on by every available member of staff asking if you need any help. And not one of them was any use at answering the question "What viewing angle does this model have?" Answers ranged from "It doesn't say" while looking at the price tag, through "Usually about 120 - 150 degrees." to "If you want a good viewing angle then you need to spend at least a few hundred more.". So not a lot of help at all really. And also, the picture shown on the instore systems has no bearing on what we'll get when we get it home and plug it in, so we can't even get any idea of picture quality.

Yeah, ignore the pictures, unless it is playing an HD/Blu-Ray disc or HD Sky!

These people really should know their onions though.

Maybe a the Sony or Panasonic shops will be able to help with the questions, but then they are specific to their makes.

We already have Sky (bog standard), and we have Freeview boxes on all the other tv's in the house, we have a hard disc recorder aswell, but if wifey wants to record something on Sky and watch something else then the only option is standard analogue tv (or go upstairs). And that's particularly bad in our area, an d also limited in program choice. Freeview would be a benefit in those circumstances, but like you say, a box would take care of that. It's just that with Sky, HD recorder, Wii and stuff already connected in there, it'd be nice not to have more wires and boxes going on aswell.

Would be good if we could upgrade to Sky Plus and lose the separate recorder and sky box.

So, TV might be sorted, how's the easiest way of upgrading to Sky Plus, given that we're a Sky subscriber at the moment. They don't like giving offers to existing subscribers as I remember.
