Stepping up from a compact camera

I've decided that I want to go to the next stage up from a compact digital camera and I'm going to get the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 as the review by the pros and users are all great and it seems to bridge the gap between a normal digi camera and an SLR which I'm not ready for.

A couple of questions for the photgraphers: Do I need to go for all singing all dancing SD cards or will normal ones do?

Where do you get decent quality prints done? I have a photo printer and I'm not that impressed by it with my existing camera so would want better results from the new camera.

Re the cards - I was told by a photographer friend that as you get bigger image sizes (especially if your shooting RAW) you benefit from faster cards so you can get the images written & so be ready quicker to take the next shot

Printing - get it done on-line or in a shop good as an inkjet it they won't match a dye-sub

I know its not answering your question but I have been making the same decision lately, the choice was between the Panasonic FZ18 and Fuji s9600 or so i thought

I had made up my mind and the Fuji was it, as it had a bigger CCD which results in less noise on higher ISO settings and better review on trustedreviews website. However i then started reading about the Sony A200 Digital SLR.

In the end i have gone for the Sony, it has cost me £263 with 18-70mm lens, which is only about £40 more than the Fuji/Panasonic.

By the way Play.com has a sale at the moment which includes memory cards.

Cheers for the replies. I'm set on the Panasonic and have read about the noise issue. My wife is a SOCO for the Police and uses both digital SLR and normal SLR and knows her onions when it comes to cameras and she has been on courses through work where professional photographers use the Panasonic as their everyday camera. Not sure if they know what it will be like for photographing anything other than dead bodies though :o

Think I will go for faster cards.

I just don't see the point of it myself, it is nearly as big as say a Canon 400d and is riddled with noise in higher isos.

Buy a used 400d with the kit lens for £250 and then buy a 50mm f/1.8 for £50, the difference in performance is staggering.

You are basically buying a compact in a massive case!

The Ricoh GRDII and GX100 give better results in a much more compact body. The GX200 is about to be released too.
