What do i need to look out for ?

Welcome to TSN Tom +++

In general, they are very reliable. A couple of pointers that spring to mind though (year dependent)

Corroding 18" alloys (very common - check for blemishes / white worm effect under the lacquer. Expensive to replace / specialist repair only)

Check spare wheel well to make sure no leaks (boot seal can leak - not too common though I think)

If it's DSG then check for smooth gear changes

If on options then check folding mirrors work OK - some (including mine) have had occasional problems not opening out again on odd occasions.

Check drivers seat for wear - easy to rub against side supports when getting in and out of car.

Can't think of any other things - generally I think they are a well built reliable car. Many people on here have now covered some fair mileage with excellent reliability. +++

Oh, and one final thing....in terms of performance, red is by far the fastest colour - at least 10 bhp more than the other colours :roflmao::P

i will be looking for around 05-06 plate.

Check whether it's a Euro import, as these only have 2 years VW UK warranty compared to 3 for UK supplied cars.

A few more things to check on an 05 / 06 reg car are :

1. Check the alloys are not replicas (they should have BBS stamped on the back)

2. Check for poorly fitting front door seals - (wind noise at speed)

3. Creaking / Groaning noises from steering rack at low speed and full lock (common problem - faulty steering rack)

4. At the bottom of front windscreen check for "milkiness" - (seal problem)

5. Erratic rear wash / wipe motors (common problem)

6. VW badges suffering the milky worm (alloy centres and rear boot)

7. Condensation / moisture in the top rear spolier brake light

More rare problems I've heard of are

6. Stepped tyres giving a "moaning sound" which sounds like a wheel bearing problem

Good luck with the search

Good luck in finding a good one +++

05 & 06 models have blue tinted glass. If the screen has been replaced, make sure it's not been changed for a later green tinted screen - I saw one in the motorways services like this the other day!!

The irratic rear wiper propblem was also specific to 05 & 06 year cars. As always with early models, they tended to suffer just one or two teething problems. Nothing too major though and I think all are detailed above.

JonnyGTI, "...Check whether it's a Euro import, as these only have 2 years VW UK warranty compared to 3 for UK supplied cars."

This is a commonly held belief but in fact ...

Both get a manufacturers warranty for 2 years.

The third year for the UK supplied cars is an inferior third party Retailer Warranty.

That sounds like a good deal to me. Apart from a slightly over generous trade in, I couldn't get any discount 2 years ago. I believe that dealers were instructed not to discount the list price at that time. It's gonna be a long 3 months for you!

yes i know :( i have sold my car now aswell so have got 3 months with out a car :( push bike it is i think:ffs:

Just what I've done to mine, bar the carbon bits. Budget for £2500 and you'll be sorted +++
