I would get the 130i, uses no more fuel and is one of the best cars you can buy full stop.

I would definitely take the 120d over the 120i, it is a peach, as is the 120i, just that you pay hardly any more for a slightly used 130i over the 120i, it uses no more fuel and it is sublime.

Yeah, I quite liked it, but 25mpg and the massive depreciation just puts me right off.

I nearly bought a 130i for £19k on a 55 plate early 2006, when I bought the 120d back in October 2006, so nearly 2 years ago, those cars are still £15k in private sales now.

A 120i was around £16-17k and you can pick them up for under £10k.

Buying a nearly new 120i I would think will cost you a fortune in depreciation.

The 130i really is a monster. And like gizze says you can easily pick up an ex demo model for 120i money. Something fun for the weekend aswell perhaps?

If not then the 120d is a brilliant car. If you've got used to the frankly noisy engine in the Audi, then i'm willing to put money on that if you don't tell your wife about the diesel in the BMW then she probably won't notice. They are incredibly refined, smooth and quiet. Plus it has more BHP than the petrol version, and more torque obviously. Residuals are stronger too.

My thoughts are that to go from an Audi diesel engine into a BMW 2.0 petrol engine, if your wife doesn't drive it harder, she might feel slightly underwhelmed. No low down torque compared to the diesel version.

Why not get a 118d? Pretty good performance (apparently) and a good 50mpg+. My Dad has a pre-efficient dynamics 120d Auto and he only manages 36mpg average, but the 118ds are meant to be very good.

Can recommend the 130i (although this may be a bit OTT). I had one for 2 years and averaged 27mpg, however I do loads of shorts runs and around town. On a long run, 35mpg was easy even sitting at 90mph. Just replaced the 130i last week with a Z3M-Coupe.....it's going to be interesting to see what the mpg drops to now. 24mpg...??

It is a very economical car but food blenders are more powerful. The 120d is the most desirable model, especially from a resale point of view aswell.
