AlexM
On my last service i came off of the longlife service plan and they changed the oil to the cheaper stuff. I still have a bottle of Castrol Edge 5W 30, is this still ok to put in the car or do i need a different type of oil?
petsy
was the cheaper stuff synthetic?
AlexM
Not too sure, i've check the receipt from the service but it doesn't say. I'll phone them tomorrow to find out
petsy
I ask as iirc you shouldn't mix synthetic with non-synthetic oil.
AlexM
Finally got round to checking this and the dealer said it should be 10w 40 oil i use, does this sound right? Has any one else used this in their car?
Rustynuts
Check in the handbook and it'll tell you what oil should be used (VW spec [eg.VW504/507] and weight[eg. 5w 40). I have to say 10w 40 doesn't sound right to me. Contact VW Customer Services, and they'll tell you what oil is required. Generally, topping up with the same oil spec is required, but no harm in using better oil (full synth into semi) if that's what is available. Topping up with worse oil (semi synth into full) is bad. Thanks, i didn't think that oil sounded like the right stuff.
Tarmac_Terrorist
My understanding is that the Longlife and Time & Distance services both use 5w - 30 oil. The difference being the that Longlife has a blend of detergents which enables the oil to perform for longer.

The manual says it's VW 501, 502 or 504, i think i should be ok with the Castrol Edge 5W -30 i have in the house
Biscuits
The manual may be assuming your on AVS service, not fixed mileage services. When I had the S4 I used the same longlife 5w30 rip-off stuff and enquried about changing to fix service to try and stop the horendous oil use (due to the thinness of LL oil). They said the oil used would be standard 10w40 Castrol GTX Magnetex and would require changing every 10,000 miles.
Rustynuts
The price difference between VW504/507 5w 30 and Castrol Magnatec 10w 40 is about £20. Surely it's worth that £20 for a good quality oil instead of that Magna****e stuff?

I came off of the long life service as i do under 10000 miles a year. Is it a bad thing to mix oils or should i go and buy 10w 40 to keep it the same? My S4 was using a litre every 1,500 miles, sometimes more... so anyhting that would help slow the oil use would have been a good thing. I didn't bother in the end, but was tempted.
