Three_Mile
My wife had a speeding fine come through the post yesterday, taken at 10.20 in the morning in Oxford, however at that time she was at a baby post natel class that started at 10.30 about 50 miles away. So clearly it can't have been our car, has anybody else had this happen to them, and how did you go about proving it couldn't have been us. I spoken to the people who run the class are quite willing to write a letter stating that my wife was there. Will that be enough, or do the police, just keep saying the camera cannot be wrong! Any advice would be appreciated.
craigyb
Sounds like you've had your number plate cloned. Another car of the same colour and type, they get away with everything and you pick up the tab.
Gren
Never had it happen to me but I'd explain this to the police and ask for a copy of the photo from the camera. I'd hope that from the photo you would be able to prove that it was not your car.......colour etc Unfortunately though, where your wife was is no proof of where your car was unless someone can prove that too. sotty
Yep, simply ask for photographic proof. You'll soon see if it's a clone or your motor.
RedRobin
Yep, simply ask for photographic proof. You'll soon see if it's a clone or your motor. ....But say why you need to see a photograph because otherwise they might think you are just being a smart arse trying to wriggle out of it and not cooperate. patently
I'd go back with a statement from the class organiser saying your wife was there, a statement from your wife saying the car was with her, a photo of her car from a speed-camera's point of view, and a letter asking for a copy of their photo. I'd have thought that if you provide a photo of her car before you see their photo, and the two are different, then it would be harder to accuse you of fixing your photo. I'd also be pointing out that their letter was evidence of a criminal act by a third party and asking what they were going to do about it. Jamiekip
I saw something on TV about this, as a guy had received about £1500 worth of fines. The police know it is an issue and if you can demonstrate that your car could not have been in the area at that time, then they will investigate. They typically invite you a to a station and they take shots of your car from the same perspective as the speed camera. They then do comparisons for things like dealer stickers in the window, badges, style of number plate etc, etc. Good luck!
shark_90
I also remember seeing this sort of thing on TV where a woman from Leeds kept getting congestion charge notices... eventually they found the cloned car in London and she even parked her car next to it yet apparently nothing was done. Amazing! I don't know if a letter from the class organiser will be enough.. was there anyone professional there? A qualified Doctor who can verify her attendance perhaps? Best of luck getting it sorted, it sounds like a nightmare
Mollox
They will most certainly be interested in where the car, and not your wife, was and that's quite hard to prove in itself. Best thing to do is get a copy of the photo, study it and hope that its easy to prove its not your car
techieboy
My previous A4 had some fecker clone it before I bought it. Within days of receiving my new V5 with my details on it, I was receiving outstanding parking fines, congestion charge fines and 2 summons' for missed court appearances - 2 or 3 a week. In the end we received about 30 seperate fines totalling up to £,000's. All of the parking tickets related to two roads in Wembley. I ran out of breath speaking to the muppets at Brent Council and even had a template letter set up to fill in each time a new fine came in and sending numerous pictures of my car. Spent a year logging every journey I did, every petrol station fill up and receipts for ATM withdrawls just to try and prove where I was at any given time. Called the DVLA about it and they said they'd put a note on file about it but all they could do was issue a new registration number (and the grief that might cause with service history etc). Called Brent police and reported it to them and they said they'd take a drive past these two roads at a similar time to all of the tickets. Within an hour of reporting it to Brent police, I got a knock on the door and it was a CID officer from our local station. Did a complete document inspection and had a close look at the car - turned out the cloned version of my car had also done a couple of driveaways from petrol stations and had also been involved in a more "serious" crime. No idea what happened in the end as everything just dried up all of a sudden after about six months.
RedRobin
....Horrendous bureaucracy in trying to prove one's innocence it would seem from the posted stories. Perhaps the extent of carbonfibre body parts etc on my car is a good thing afterall
