Rear door problems!

Hi all,

The car is a Golf MKIV and about a month ago, one of my rear passenger doors stopped unlocking and can't be opened from inside or out. I thought that i'd leave it for a while before getting it fixed so i could get some funds together.

A few weeks later and the other rear passenger door has got exactly the same symptoms and now i can't get my baby girl in the back of the car!!!

It seems strange that both locks have stopped working. I was wondering if it's something that's common to both door locks (like wiring).

Has anyone else had experience of this fault? I wondered if i could find where the door lock solenoid wiring is connected and try applying 12V to the solenoid so that i can prove the solenoid is okay and hopefully, open the door at the same time. If this didn't work, then i don't know what to do and i will have to save a hell of a lot more funds up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

smn

Hello, yes it's a common fault. It's the door lock module. Here is a link -http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1542461 - from VW Vortex in the US which concentrates on the cause/solution to the problem - mainy on the front. Essentially, it's poor soldering. Having fixed 3 myself, including one rear door, I'd say that unless you have a moderate level of 'taking apart and putting together fiddly things' expertise and access to a soldering iron, don't bother because it's a lot of hassle. The back one was a nightmare - getting the window out is a bugger, getting it beck in is worse, and actually getting to the lock module - buried right at the far back of the door - is just ridiculous! The replacement parts from VW are about £80-90. A VW specialist/dealer will be VERY familiar with the procedure!

If you decide to go it alone, let me know and I can give you details of how to get the rear window out etc.!

Update:

I've managed to get both doors open now. I found that by pushing the door inwards, while banging with the side of my hand on outside just below door handle VERY hard and someone else operating the drivers door lock controls continuously, they both unlocked!

Now i have to source the spares and repair it which will now be a whole lot easier (i hope).

Thanks for the reply Benjie, could you please provide me with the details you mentioned about how to replace the lock module?

Hope this advice can help anyone else who is suffering this fault.:ffs:

Kind Regards

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello, sorry for the long wait, work is quite busy at the moment (despite the fact I'm a teacher and the kids are on holidays!)

I have the instructions here in my haynes manual, if you pm me your e-mail address, I'll send you a copy of the page(s) as it's a rather long process to explain!
