MiguelMcTyson
Wondered if anyone can offer any comments through experience of having this retro-fitted and does anyone no of a professional firm offering the service
MiguelMcTyson
ps does the fact I've got a stubby ariel mean I have a phone prep or is that just for NAv?
burble
I retro fitted mine and it took about 15 minutes start to finish - it's an absolute doddle. As for the antenna, there are numerous different versions of the stubby ones. If the car didn't come with phone prep and nav then it'll just be an AM/FM antenna. MiguelMcTyson
Hi Burble, did you have the bluetooth already or did you fit that, and where did you source the unit and how much? Also as you are just down the roadfancy doing mine, I'll buy you a fish supper, joking!
burble
I had the bluetooth kit supplied and installed by a nice chap called Stu. There's more information on his website. It's a website about his (now sold) Octavia VRS but the kit and installation is the same for the MkV Golf. I'd originally planned to install the BT kit myself as it doesn't look too hard but I broke my leg a few months ago and still couldn't kneel down properly so I asked Stu to do it for me. I'll happily install the RNS510 for you if you want, like I said, it's only a 15 minute job.
MiguelMcTyson
Thanks for that link, one of the main reasons for thining about the nav upgrade is so I can have full functionality with the bluetooth, the advice I've had so far is that it isn't possible to make it work with my nav unit which is the old OEM one. Very kind of you to offer to fit, any idea where I can source a unit?
robs1977
You could still fit that bluetooth to yours but it wouldn't display anything on the navigation screen, you would control it from stalk and it would display in the multi function screen between the clocks. It is a lot of money for so little function though and not really worth it,you are much better off getting RNS510 as the functions with this are much better. burble
I got my RNS510 from eBay, it was one of the first ones to appear and I paid about $2000 for it. I've no idea how well the BT will integrate with the MFD2, maybe drop Stu and email and see if he knows.
MiguelMcTyson
Cheers guys, now we have added the "Full Function" ipod kit into the mix apparently this gives full function through the RNS510, any thoughts anyone?
burble
Got any more information about the iPod link? There are a couple of iPod links that VW sell. One of which is complete crap, and one that isn't. How much is the one you're talking about? I've got the better one (called MDI interface) and it does indeed give me full control over my iPod. The older iPod interface connects through the CD changer interface and doesn't give full control or track names on screen unlike the one I have. robs1977
There is a 3rd one which has just come out called Media-in,it is a cable connection in glovebox same as the original ipod one but it displays the track names. It uses the same small cables as the armrest mdi,it is £140 for the unit then £20 each for Ipod usb etc etc cables.
burble
Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that one.
MiguelMcTyson
I "think" this is the MDI, they are saying can go in the armrest, basically I am being quoted £1500 for the Nav unit, £500 for the Bluetooth and £250 for the new Ipod cable, they are then giving me a £500 trade in on my older nav unit
burble
Double check on the iPod interface because the original (and crap) one goes in the armrest too. For £250 though I would expect it to be the MDI interface.
MiguelMcTyson
It's definitely not that one as I have that already although it doesn't work, infact I'm going through the process of having it replaced before I rip it out, are they worth anything second hand? burble
Sod all I expect, you can get them brand new on eBay for about £50.
MiguelMcTyson
Apparently it's only the cable thats being replaced which costs even less, I'll think I'll forget it and just get the nav in, any info on this cables integration anywhere? burble
There's a fair bit more information about the MDI interface here including some pictures of the iPod control that I took after installing mine.
MiguelMcTyson
That looks fantastic, I want it now!
burble
It's a nice piece of kit. I'm not currently using mine with my iPod but a 160Gb 2.5" hard drive in a USB enclosure but either way it works very well.
MiguelMcTyson
All fitted and up and running now, what a brilliant set up, haven't put anything on the internal hard disk yet but the media interface sort of makes that a bit obsolete really. One thing i do need help with if anyone has the answer if I select a playlist and am listening to a track, there seems to be no way of going right back to that playlist, the selection option often takes me to an alphabetical list of tracks on the ipod?
