Phone wars.. it's hotting up

Well it looks like things are getting serious in the way of mobile devices. I'm currently using a Blackberry Pearl and although I like the phone I get so bored of them in a short space of time that I like to chop and change.

I'm holding off buying anything at the moment though, because it looks like things are starting to get serious. The phones that have caught my attention so far are:

iPhone 3G - MrsShark is getting one of these on Monday as an upgrade from O2. Will be good to have a play with the phone and see how it works, as this is a possible upgrade for me. Also like the idea of plugging it into the car and having my tunes with me without carrying another device around. Will sync with my Exchange account which is good, although most devices do these days.

Samsung Omnia - A mate of mine has just got one of these and they do look very good. Feature packed and with 8Gb onboard it's got as much storage as the iPhone and a MicroSD card slot for cheap additional memory. I love the little touchpad for mouse movement and it looks nice. However my previous experience with WM devices tells me that in day to day use it probably won't cut the mustard as they tend to be laggy and not particularly nice to use.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 - this phone is like sex in a mobile telephonic form. It oozes class and has a lovely slide out QWERTY keyboard which is really sexy. The problem is, it's WM6.1 like the Samsung, which I feel is probably going to be a letdown. Oh, and it's bloody expensive! Again, ticks all the boxes on paper, but how will it perform?

Blackberry Storm - This looks like it's going to be a good device. Very good infact. Pre-release pictures look as though Blackberry mean business with this one - a true iPhone contender. You can download music directly from the Vodafone store (which I think is unlimited for £8/month but don't quote me) and like the others it can play movies using the wide 3.25" screen. The one major downside to this is the email integration, I'd have to use the Blackberry service instead of connecting it directly to my Exchange box.

So far, part of me is swayed towards the iPhone as it appears to tick all the right boxes and can also perform as well as it says it can. I fear the Samsung and the Sony might be a let down due to the OS. And I think the Blackberry will probably be the best device of the lot but I miss the email integration.

Any thoughts or experiences? Any excting alternatives that I haven't mentioned? +++

Not for those of us using Notes + BES. Its the killer app we've been waiting for. If i get one more Iphone user ask me if they can get Blackberry mail I'll kill them

So it's not just me who uses Notes & BES! :D

I think the HTC could be OK - our FD has one on order for next week so will intercept the post and steal it for a bit of a play! +++

A colleague at work has got a Touch HD on order looks good on the vidoes and much better than the Touch Pro that seems to be dire.

I don't think I can be arsed with a bit fancy phone, I'm still not sold on the iPhone I'm afraid.

I've got the 5800 on pre-order as a stop gap I think Nokia are going to launch a full touch N series phone early next year that could be another good front runner. +++

My wife has the Samsung Omnia.. it's a good phone but runs on the mobile windows platform which can be buggy and a pain to set up.. still the e-mail is good as is the camera. The voice clarity on the phone is absolutely excellent.

I have a Nokia E71 and think it's excellent.. does everything I need a phone to do and compact and lightweight.

Blackberry Storm looks and feels good but not a business device and ifyou need to do lots of typing you will end up chucking it out the window after 1 day. The better bet for serious typers is the Bold which is basically the same device but with a proper QWERTY keyboard.

The Storm is RIM's attempt at stealing Iphone sales and suspect it will but not for business users either of them

Nah, theres still lots of big businesses that use it despite the negativety out there towards it (usually caused by ignorance)

..and cost, difficulty of resourcing etc. Not everyone is that ignorant :P Some people just don't like it. It's actually a very difficult product to sell and demand for it has been dropping off exponentially for the last 5 years. In fact the last time it was marginally ahead of Exchange was 2003 - it's been downhill ever since.

I've got an iphone 3g and I love it.

Theres a few things that could be improved upon though-

Like a better camera (although the 2mp offering does take quite good pics anyway), and the ability to record video would be nice.

The text messaging software, while easy to use, doesn't allow you to save an individual message from someone, you have to delete every message from that person, or keep every message from said person.

Apart from those points, I think it's perfect, and most likely they will be addressed once the next iphone is out, the user interface is so slick and intuitive, and the best thing is that it just works, perfectly.

One thing that always p*sses me off with phones is bugs and glitches in the operating system, my N95 used to do my head in, even once de-branded and loaded with the latest generic Nokia firmware it still crashed out, slowed down and generaly annoyed me most of the time, the iphone just does what it's meant to.

Main annoyances with my iPhone:

1. Poor battery life. My main office is like big bloody faraday cage and it kills the battery through searching inside 3 hours. Normal operation with 3G on gives me 7:00am thru around 8:00pm. Would be nice to be longer.

2. SMS. Cannot save individual messages or forward.

3. Cannot send MMS. WTF is that all about?

4. BlueTooth implementation is weak.

5. Internet browsing is still relatively slow even with 3g.

I would agree with most of that, no MMS is annoying.

I find the bluetooth to be strange, you cant really do anything with it other than connect to hands free devices, which it does way better than my nokias ever have, but then you cant recieve pictures or videos from your mates via it?

I find the Internet much faster than it ever was on my Nokia, and the ability to use any BT and Cloud wi-fi hotspots for free is useful, there are quite a few wi-fi phone boxes near me, so when I'm out at work I just stop next to one of those and surf for free.

My battery life has increased dramatically since the firmware update, before that it was rubbish, but now lasts a couple of days no problem.

I want a new mobile phone. I don't need one, I just want one. :smashfreak:

I've got my eye on the new SE C905, but it's rather expensive. So far, the cheapest I've found it is from The Carphonewarehouse, on Orange PAYG at £360 here. But I want to put an Asda (Vodafone) SIM in it. However, it's my understanding that Orange phones are generally branded as such and network locked. :ffs:

The next best I've seen is Play.com @ £400 here.

Orange do lock their phones unfortunately :( Not sure what their policy is on unlocking.

The Storm doesn't have the punch like the Bold has..

So business wise the Bold is better also good for the remote admin tools. But the Curve can do it also. Berry also being more secure and easier for roaming around the world do to quite a few factors over a windows mobile device.
