scooby_simon
Chaps, I'm feckin usless with PC hardware!!! My laptop graphics card is on the way out; getting the classic grain/lines so it's time to change it - plugged the machine into on eof my desktop monitors and get the same as the Lappy screen, so it's not the lappy screen!. The blurb says the card is: "nvidia geforce go 7600 512 ddr" Googling it there appears to be many options for replacement; any suggestions as to a good one. Don't really play games so don't need an uber card; but do spend a fair amount of time doing image intensive work. What do I need to do to ensure it fits the Lappy ? Edit to add; just had "Display driver nvidia" has stopped working and recovered"; might this be a driver problem? bullett
Are you sure you can replace it? Laptop GPU's (even he NVidia or ATI) ones are typically mounted on the mobo not user serviceable. If the GPU goes in a lappy it's a new PC normally. Have you got the latest drivers?

Not sure I have the latest drivers. I assume I can just go to the Nvidia website and get the latest? It has just started giving the error message. I'm going to try re-booting it agin in a few mins
scooby_simon
Weird as poo.... Just logged into my account and same old.... Then logged into a Seperate admin account and it loaded up OK. Then switched user back to my account and all is fine and dandy. I think this might be software based, or overheating? Will try finding an updating drivers !
cruiser647
If the hardware on the laptop is fecked, then unfortunately it's new laptop time. Most things in laptops is hard soldered in and embedded with many other bits in one chip. The only things on laptops you can change/replace is usually the memeory, modem card, wireless and or CPU (model dependent). However, try the drivers and see what happens. scooby_simon
Downloaded the driver .exe utility from the NVidia site and it could not find the driver the Lappy needed; I also ran the utility from the site. Lappy is still owrking at the moment....
scooby_simon
Bollox; Feckin thing will not even turn on at the moment. I think I'll take it to bits and have a look in side later and see if there are any obvious issues... I'd like to get some of the data that I have on it that is not on the latest backup; any ideas? Suppose I need a new lappy now. Perfect timing; NOT.... Ideas? Something similar would be nice... Budget, I suppose is 1K. NOT a happy bunny... Chav
why would you spend a grand on a laptop if you've been made redundant (I think you said that a few weeks ago?) you dont need to spend more than 400-500. get one with core2duo and 2gigs of ram - and any old graphics card. unless you're a game playing guru, there's little real world benefits in anything more. maybe worth investing in one with DVI or HDMI out if you're considering using it with a big external monitor so you have a nice picture at 1920x1200. even so - still way under 500 notes. ....then spend another 20 quid on an external flash stick to backup important data! Pa55aT
How about this one, slightly over budget but good warranty and spec. ALDI - Thursday Special Buys 30th October 2008
D1MAC
How about this one, slightly over budget but good warranty and spec.ALDI - Thursday Special Buys 30th October 2008 I think you will be lucky to get one of those - at least at the moment. From what I was reading yesterday (as I'm looking for a lappy at the same price point), each Aldi only gets a few and they were going at 9, 10 am yesterday. Dell outlet? Or there are one or two HP ones with HDMI etc for around £500 sheets.

CarMad
ok, suggestions at 500GBP? I got a Dell XPS 1330 (current PCPRO best laptop) for £600 ish but it was 3GB, 2.2Ghz Core2Duo, Bluetooh, LED backlit screen, Wirelss N and a graphics accelerator. Its a joy to use and hasn't missed a beat, its light and the screen is great and battery life good. Quality terms is as good as my current Lenovo and the old thinkpads I've used put it that way. You need to keep an eye on it for a while as stock comes in and out all the time. You need to be quick to get the exact spec you might want. Spec below is £472 delivered. When you put them in the basket there is a tick box to save a further £55 on each order at the moment as well. http://outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDispatcher?target=InventoryPage&action=page&pageNo=1&lob=INSP&sessionID=fGZLJMLf!-1990982544!1759334474!1225575327753 Select Inspiron Laptops > then select the XPS 1330 or 1530 if you want the larger screen. Tomorrow I have the house to myself as the wife is taking the kids to the outlaws so I am going to take the HP lappy to bits and see if there is anything that looks dodgy before I finally shell out dosh.... CarMad
I've never been impressed by Dell laptops until I got this one, much better than the rep a like Latitude models. It looks and feels good and does the job and is great on a budget. The Dell Outlet machines also offer very good value for money saving ££. I've had 3 Dell outlet machines (1 laptop 2 desktop) and all have been spot on.

scooby_simon
Carmad, Whats the basic differences between the: Dell XPS 1330 Dell XPS 1530 and Dell XPS 1710
CarMad
The size of the screen mainly. 1330 13", 1530 15" etc. They all are slightly different designs finished and the processors on the larger models tend to me a little faster as its easier to make a big laptop for a price than a smaller one. The 1330 is bigger than the ultra-portables but isn't 15" heavy to sit on your lap its even got an HDMI connection, used it to show photos on the TV, it works well. Her is a sample review Dell XPS M1330 Review - Notebook Reviews - TrustedReviews though this was when it was first launched and things have got faster / cheaper since.
