RobK
Just wondering what everyone does for backups on their home PCs? It used to be you could use Zip disks etc but with the size of hard drives these days what can you back them up to? Another hard disk?

pontyslapper
Aldi's are doing a 250Gb External from Thursday for £49.99 whereas Ebuyer have 500Gb jobbies for the same money plus a bit of delivery or 1Tb for £84.99!!! Wifey, I'm needing one of these to backup the photos of the little one ;D Edited October 27, 2008 by pontyslapper
Jez
A slightly different solution but depending on how many PC's you have you could get a Windows home server like the HP Media Smart Server EX475 1TB which automatically backs up all your machines and does a whole lot of other funky stuff. PC recovery is as easy as putting a cd in the drive and selecting the backup you want to restore from or you can restore individual files from the backups. RobK
I've got a Windows 2008 server at home but haven't looked at the backup software yet. I guess I could bung in a 1TB disk and set something up on that.
Mac
My stuff at home auto-backups up to an iMac which is then backued up by Timemachine. In addition to that, critical stuff is hived off to Mozy.
CarMad
All clients backup to the homeserver, essential photos / music etc. gets sent off site via carbonite. Carbonite has no limit on the data within a reasonable amount I've got 130ish gb off site with them at the moment.
burble
The Windows machines backup onto a 2Tb NAS which in turn is rsync'd to a 2Tb NAS that lives in the office. The MacBook uses Time Machine onto a 1Tb Time Capsule. There's nothing important on the MacBook that isn't on the Windows machines so if the MacBook and the TC go tits up it isn't a problem. My ESX server (which lives in the office) is backed up manually by me stopping all the virtual machines and copying the virtual hard drives onto a NAS which then replicates with another NAS in the office in Paris. Rachel
Firewire connected HDDs and I use Carbon Copy Cloner to handle the data...
pontyslapper
At the moment I manually disperse the data in chunks around my HDDs both internal and external - it is a pain but I'm just can't be faffed to setup a backup system - I know I should but 2.5TB of storage 'on tap' is gonna get expensive backupwise especially with the non-regularity of work at the moment. Wifey is stamping on all 'non-Christmas/essential' spending and my 'toys' are way down the list even coming after bloody fripperys such as her works christmas do. I can't argue as her wage is regular and mine isn't despite it being a lot more when it comes in.
