cruiser647
In my role as BBC Correspondent, I have copied and pasted from my site :- BBC NEWS | Politics | Hoon backs speed camera overhaul Mr Hoon is using spin to get the average speed cameras through and set-up. He says people might see 'fixed site' speed cameras as unfair (which is true), and that average speed cameras will be better...........(bollox). What they really need are video cameras at dodgy junctions/accident black spots to record stuff for 60 mins each time - then re-record over it until an accident then they can see what actually happened. OR redesign the junction in the first place.................
theduisbergkid
This was reported in the Times today too. As mentioned elsewhere, we already have average speed cameras on many long stretches of Motorway/A road (M11 to A1 on the A14 for example), and I have mixed thoughts. It is genuinely difficult to achieve an average of 70 mph on many of these stretches in 'normal' hours due to traffic anyway, my only concern is that the specs cameras used to measure may also issue 'spot' measurement fines too (like Gatso). I've recently spotted the same cameras going up on the M42, also M6 and they've been on sections of the A1 and M1 for some time already. There is simply nothing we can do about it. I have given up on enjoying the odd motorway blast as traffic and/or scameras seem to thwart any fun at most times of the day. Fun can be found on quiet B roads, at lower speeds, in modest motors. (B6047 in the MX5 being my fave). Mind you, the M69 remains camera free, never too busy, and the few cops that operate on that section are reasonable chaps

Actually, that's quite a good idea. Edited November 9, 2008 by patently
OldSkoO1
I dont drive through SPECs m-way sections but surely they are more congested? If there are SPECs surely no-one overtakes and the traffic just bunches up - doesn't that cause more accidents? I'd hate to see SPECs on A roads out of town, nearly everyday i need a burst of acceleration to get past slow drivers and that would mess up my average speed. I hope they actually think about it this time round.
redrob
I was caught last month on an average speed camera 3 points and £60 just as you come off the M3 onto the A316 at Sunbury there are roadworks over a 2-3 mile stretch and my average speed was 36mph in a 30 at 8.38pm
