prt57
Hi, I have a Mk IV GTI 1.8T and have owned it from new. I have replaced the divertor valve a couple of times when it starts to whoosh a bit on gear changes. Normally the noise goes away but this time there was no improvement when I renewed the valve. I took the old one to bits and there was a split in the diaphragm so it was faulty. What else causes the slight whooshing noise? Cheers, Peter
Mook
Check to see if there's a split pipe. If it's on the rubber inlet pipe, you have to replace the whole thing.
prt57
Hi Mook, which of the pipes is the inlet pipe? Cheers, Peter
Mook
Open the bonnet. On the right hand side, behind the battery, there's a black box that measures about 12" x 10", which contains the air filter. There's a rubber pipe about 3" in diameter that runs from the MAF sensor to the turbo inlet. The DV comes out of the top of this. Check the whole pipe for leaks. One way you can do this is to run the car at tickover and then flex the pipe to see if you can hear any leaks. After you've done this, while still flexing the pipe, lightly spray some WD40 around the pipe and see if the revs increased or stutter. If they do, you've got a leak.
