phn
I have a 1998 Audi S8, to which I have already added a Miltek exhaust. I'm considering getting a remap done now by the same people who fitted the exhaust - AMD in Essex. They say it will cost approx 400 quid and will improve driveability / econonmy. I'm interested, but worried that it might impose extra stresses on the engine or affect reliability. I don't want to do anything that might damage my precious car! Has anyone remapped their S8, and if so, what was the result? How much BHP / Torque was gained, and what happened to the driveability? Are there any negative aspects of remapping? Thanks in advance for your answers! Philip.
Figure11
Been a regular topic on hear eversince I joined. I think mkoneman has had it done and one or 2 others. Gives about 10% more power. I would be interested in the outcome. It shouldn't harm your engine just your wallet :D. The engines are pretty bullet proof and should be good for much bigger increases. Let us know how it goes. mkoneman
yeah i had mine done, I'm not sure on the total gain yet as i haven't had a chance to get back on the roller yet, its not a massive improvement if I'm honest but it all adds up. but it would be hard to notice an extra 15 or so bhp on top of 362bhp. my favorite bit is the speed limiter removed cracked just under 170 on the speedo the other night, lol

My 2p's worth I think its a complete waste of money, 10% increase on a naturally aspirated car is optimistic I think. I suspect youd be lucky to get an extra 10hp. IT_S8
cracked just under 170 on the speedo the other night, lol The speedos read optimistic anyway, for lots of boring legal reasons. As you get higher up the speed range, the more optimistic it becomes. 10% is not uncommon and 'reads' an extra 15mph at 150mph for example, so showing a rather false 165mph at that point. My S8 read about 170 on the autobahn before the 155mph limiter kicked in. The ECU limits the speed, not the speedo so unless you've got a GPS device, tom tom or something to verify the speed, then I suspect you wern't actually going over 155 anyway.... So, next time you're in 'Germany' you'll just have to drive a little quicker or take something with you measure the speed to see if the limiter has really been taken off .... mkoneman
Yeah I bet it is a bit out, my mate was also coming back from 'germany' at the same time in his brand new 325 bmw and he said he was doing 150 on his speedo and I was pulling a big gap on him, the light weren't projecting that far ahead at that speed to keep the power on The cars speed is bigger than my balls
mkoneman
Also if the ecu knows how fast the car is going why can't they get this onto the speedo so it reads right? Unless it just has a lower rev limiter when it's in 5th

treetotreef
With Cruse control enabled to keep the speed constant, my S8 is showing 80mph on the clock, Garmin say nav is showing 75mph and if you reset the average speed once you reach 80 on the clock, it shows 73mph. I bet if you ran VAG COM and call up the wheel speed channels they would show something similar to the average figure... As for the speed limiter, It's probably done similar to my old skyline. That had a signal wire going to the ECU to tell it when the vehicle reached 180kph(~190kph on the clock). It would then cut the spark and just hop off the limiter, usually in 3rd,4th or 5th gear, leaving you stuck on the wrong side of the road when overtaking something! To solve that problem, I just traced the wire from wiring diagrams going to the ECU , cut it, and hey presto! I'd imagine the Audi system is more complicated and run's most electronics off CAN BUS...
