Hi all,

Im sure this is an ongoing debate here, but, further to my earlier posts; Ive noticed a lot of Golfs which year for year seem cheaper than the Audi.

Marque rivalry apart wink.gif what are the pros and cons?

I assume an obvious one is depreciation.

What about performance, handling, tunability, fuel economy etc etc

Thanks for any advice

If your not a snob, then go for the Golf.

Insurance may be cheaper too !

Dont want to open a can of worms but the Audi 1.8T is group 14 insurance where as the Golf GTi has a bit of an unfortunate history (Max Power etc) therefore I think the Golf will cost more? wink.gif

Plus the Audi has superb build quality! jump.gif

I've had a Golf and my wife has an A3 1.8T and so I have a few views...!

The Audi has better build quality and feels more solid.

The Golf is bigger inside.

The Audi feels "tighter" to drive and heavier and has better radio / CD as standard.

The Audi feels quicker (if we're talking 150BHP variants for both) which is odd as it is heavier.

Tuning / chipping opportunities should be the same as the engine is the same.

The Golf is cheaper.

The Golf has a better laid-out dash and it looks better at night when lit up.

You feel you can throw the Golf around more into corners (just a feeling).

The Audi is more exclusive (there are a lot more Golfs than A3s!)

Just a few thoughts - hope they help

Hi

Thanks guys, cheers EdIver - sound advice there, all makes sense.

Im not sure if there are as many Golfs with leather/Air Con option but I guess its just luck of the draw.

Good point about the dash at night aswell, I love the blue bits and bobs, a matching Kenwood can really set it off.

Just done an insurance quote with Tesco:

Audi: £401

Golf: £466

Backs up the theory about chequered insurance history of the Golfs I guess!

Incidently, my Mk3 golf GTi 8v is about £400 too and requires proof of immobiliser everytime
