Andrew
Hi, Couldn't find a thread detailing RS4 (most recent) running costs; there are a few on the M3. Now this car is getting into vaguely affordable territory for many more, has anyone got an opinion on the running costs? From my own research warranty is a must at £1200 per annum. Insurance for me was cheaper than on an E46 M3, possibly the 4WD effect? One of my customers with an RS4 maintains that other than its thirst, the B7 RS4 isn't too expensive to run (especially compared to an M3). Anyway, thoughts (or mods can delete this if I'm duplicating)? Andrew.
Daz
In the 2 years I had mine I think I had a new set of tyres after 12k miles (£900) and a service at 17,000 (£400). I also did my own oil/filter change at about 10,000 miles (£150). It's mainly brakes, tyres and fuel which are the main costs.
max_b
Andrew, I think costs are fairly sensible for this car, considering it is a 4.2 v8 420 bhp monster. You get all the practicality as well as the power with 4wd. Costs as I see them - Service £300/400 (Variable servicing around every 13/17k) Brakes £1000 for pads/discs - cheaper if you go specialist Tyres £700/1000 Road tax £405 and Fuel (depends on the right foot, but 16/20 around town, upto 25/27 motorway) Best bet is to find one in warranty with some of the above bits done, which will naturally be mileage dependant Max
Andrew
Yes, those costs are not too bad. My mere LCR was £500 for the brakes. Compared to the M3 the RS4 seems like a bargain - perhaps the M3 has more specialist parts and is more highly tuned/stressed.
mb
I had a good look at RS4s recently - its a tricky market to judge as private & trade seem much the same price - there are quite a few at about 35-30k miles many with new brakes & some warranty left but others without. Have decided I would start to resent the roadtax in a couple of years so think will wait for B8 S4s to reduce in price now but there are some good cars to be had with warranty left - autotrader seems better the pistonheads for these when I looked
Mook
B7 RS4 v B8 S4? Don't think there's much competition in that and, having owned an S4, they're a long way from being fairly depreciation proof, unlike the original and B7 RS4
PetrolDave
will wait for B8 S4s to reduce in price Having had 2 B6 S4s and now got a B7 RS4 I have to say that the S4s got boring within 3 months but the RS4 still makes me smile after very nearly 3 years. Unless the B8 S4 is a whole lot better than the B6/B7 S4 (and none of the tests suggest it's that much of an improvement) then if you enjoy driving then I think going for a B8 S4 instead of a B7 RS4 would be a bad move. If you don't go for a B7 RS4 you'll be thinking for the rest of your life "I wish I had gone for an RS4"... do it!

mb
I know & they are coming out of warranty too... Where's the avatar for putting your fingers in your ears & saying lalalalalalalalalalalalala so I can ignore you lot ? TBH if Poole Audi were 1/2 sensible they could have sold me a couple of weeks ago one when I was feeling weak - these cars either seem to be in the wrong part of the country, heavily used, overpriced or disappear in 10 minutes = a lot of hassle to buy ! Andrew
I agree about AT seeming to be a better place to find them than PH. Frankly, I've made a firm decision not to change mine. I had it washed last week only to reveal another scratch. I'd be gutted if it was my RS4 that had the same scratch so until I get house with a drive (next year) I'm not even going to bother looking or thinking about it. That said ... hmmmm Auto Trader UK - Audi RS4 4200 cc 4.2 quattro 420 BHP (Black Optics Pack)

PetrolDave
Not sure it has the right steering wheel though - evasive photo. The "proper" steering wheel can be retrofitted, and the phone can be controlled from the sat nav controls.

Andrew
I do ... but no. That said, spend £28k, get trade in for mine down to £23.5, add in £10k and finance £13k. But still, no, not at the moment. Something similar will be round the next corner in 24 months ...
Andrew
Obviously I've changed my mind on this again and now think I'll get one next year. However, something at the back of my mind is telling me that spending circa £30k on a (what will then be) 3 year old car is not the wisest move. Looking at RS246 there are DRC issues (although a 5 yr warranty on these should mean that isn't too much of an issue) and potential coking problems too, so maybe it is a car to buy from nearly new and sell on when the warranty is up. It is a good few months off, but anyone got any opinions on this?
Brabus
It is a good few months off, but anyone got any opinions on this? Yeah, my opinion is live life to the max cause you never know what's around the corner. Get one now!
Andrew
Yes, agreed, but in this case I can at least ask people what might be around the corner in terms of the car's longevity!
PetrolDave
It is a good few months off, but anyone got any opinions on this? If you read the threads about coking on RS246 carefully you'll see that while it looks nasty the effect on loss of power is minimal. With the DRC warranty now 5 years surely it makes most sense to buy an RS4 that's around 3 years old and has the Audi extended warranty (£1220 per year for under 15,000 miles) and get a couple of years fun driving with warranty cover on the possibly weak components. If you delay the purchase by a year, you'll only have 1 years fun driving with the backup of warranty cover... Live life, buy an RS4 today! Andrew
That is precisely my intention - an 07 next year. I hope you can extend the warranty past 15,000 miles though and your post was a typo! I factored in the two years under warranty. I bought my current car at 7,000 miles and will sell next year with over 80k after almost seven years so if it is an RS4 I vouch for then it has to be capable of lasting some good distance. I hope you can extend the warranty past 15,000 miles though and your post was a typo! I factored in the two years under warranty. No it's NOT a typo - you extend the warranty one year at a time for £1220 per year (if under 15,000 additional miles per year, more for unlimited). I still reckon you're crazy to wait a year ... even after 3 years ownership my RS4 still makes me smile like a Cheshire Cat and take the "long route" home - no other car has ever done that for more than a few weeks. Andrew
Well, I need to wait until next year, it isn't so much that I want to. Just so happens it still works out. Understood about the mileage, 15,000 is more than enough per annum! Thanks for your input though, keeps my enthusiasm up and appetite whet!
