RNS-E problem - no satellites!

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help. I bought an A4 cabriolet a couple of months ago, which had the RNS-E satnav already installed (factory fit). The car is an 05 model.

The sat nav didn't seem to work, but i thought it was the Satnav DVD which was supplied, as when i tried a route, the error message was "destination is not on a known road" or words to that effect. However, the DVD seems to be a genuine Audi Western Europe, 2 disc set, which i think is the correct one?

I've now realised that on one of the menus, the system says "number of satellites in range - 0" no matter where i am. I'm now thinking maybe its a problem with the GPS receiver itself?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to confirm the problem, and how to fix it? i didn't buy the car from an Audi main dealer, and the garage i bought it from has a warranty that doesn't seem to be worth the paper it is written on. Is this something that can only be fixed by an Audi main dealer, or does anyone know of a specialist in the Durham area who might have the necessary technical know how when it comes to the satnav system?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Paul

Usually this is due to the cable to the GPS receiver mounted in the boot failing as it passes through the boot hinges.

You can replace the cable, quite tricky.

or

Buy a £20 GPS unit from ebay with a BLUE Fakra connector for the RNS-E and either put it at the back of the cluster under the dash, or under the dash above the glovebox, that will fix the issue.

Thanks Craigyb, so i hopefully don't need a new Satnav system then! Is this something that could be fixed by a novice such as myself, or could it be done cheaply by a mobile specialist, or cheaply by a local VAG specialist garage do you think?

I'm useless when it comes to wiring etc, if i bought one of the units off ebay, would it be tricky to wire in, would i need to reset the Satnav system etc?

Again, many thanks for your help!!

It's dead easy Paul - you just need to pull the satnav system out of the dash (you'll need special keys to do this - about £5 from your local Halfords). You'll also need to remove the glove box, so you can route the cable up behind it.

Mount the magnetic receiver as high up and as close to the outside of the car as possible - it doesn't need to be under the roof-lining. Route the cable back to the satnav unit, plug it in and Robert's your mother's brother :D

Thanks! So no need for software updates or anything to make the satnav system recognise the GPS receiver?

Apologies if this is a thick question, but when you say "remove the glovebox", what does this entail? i am a complete numpty when it comes to anything car related and don't want to cause a great big mess!

Is there any of these GPS receivers which work better? Do i need any extra wiring? Presumably i just plug the new receiver in to the socket where the old GPS receiver is currently plugged in?

Thanks again for all the help!!

I can't comment on how to remove the glove box, but yes you should be able to plug the new GPS receiver straight into the back of your RNS-E unit, providing you get one with the correct connector.

If you are worried about doing it (which it sounds like you are) then best to get somebody who knows what they are doing to fit it, just in case. The last thing you want to do is break something by forcing it, or not knowing how to put the glove box back in again properly

Take the side panel off the glovebox with a flat blade.

Unscrew the 5x 8mm bolts, 6 if you have a 6 CD changer in the glovebox and the sixth is behind the 6 CD, so remove that first.

Glovebox just drops down.

When the Nav unit is removed you can clearly see the blue FAKRA for the GPS, unplug and plug in the new lead, afix the GPS receiver to the underside of the dash, tidey the cables and refit the glovebox/CD changer.

Hi All,

Thanks again for the help! I had a shufty around in the boot on Saturday, but can't see the GPS aerial to see if it is loose or not. Does anyone know specifically where the aerial should be on an A4 cabriolet?

Also, bought the "Autoleads" radio removal keys from Halfords on Saturday, but don't want to break something. The guy in Halfords said to remove the small hook part from the end of the key otherwise it will get stuck? Does anyone have a thicko's guide to removing the satnav system, preferably with pictures!

Again, apologies for stupid questions, i just want to get it right!

Is there a correct way of putting the key in though, as there is a hook on each key facing in a particular direction.

I'm just conscious that the guy in Halfords said to remove the hook from the end of each key (with a file!) otherwise it will get stuck, and not to put the key all the way in otherwise it will get stuck! i just don't want to end up driving round with keys stuck in my satnav unit for the next 2 years :-)

Thanks,

Paul

I don't think there is a special method needed to push the keys in. That said it is over a year since I last used them.

I certainly didn't need to attack the keys with a file, nor did I have any problems removing the keys when I had the headunit out.

Like most things Halfords guys say, there's no need to take any notice of what he says!

Push the keys in - they'll only go fully in one way - and you DO want them to go so far in they get stuck otherwise they might pull out when you try to remove the unit! Once it's out just press on the locking tabs to remove the keys.
