theduisbergkid
Went out on Friday night and got a lift back with a mate who was driving. He often has classy motors, and Friday was no surprise, he has one of these : I've always secretly fancied one of these... but what a let down ! You could hear the engine whining (CVT auto by the sounds of it), the interior was black/black but too bling, I could spot parts-bin bits (fag lighter), it didn't absorb bumps like I expected, and didn't really 'move' much either. Plus, the footwell was shallow, so the seating position (in the front) was awkward, and it was about 6' bigger in each direction that I imagined, parking was a nightmare... Ever met one of your heros ?
Mook
Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing at the Monterey Classic Car Rally in California - utterly immaculate condition and 2,000 km on the clock. I'd bumped (literally) into Sterling Moss the day before at Laguna Seca, about 15 minutes before he crashed a 1937 Aston...
SINGH
I went up to look at one last year as I had a crazy idea of wafting about in a nice Bentley and then hiring it out as a wedding car every weekend. It certainly looks the part but I wasn't bowled over. I also remember the seatbelt and front light not working. I walked away. My hero though has always been the C5 RS 6, been in a few remapped 500BHP+ monsters now, last time was two weeks ago at the Audisrs meet. Just as fast and as good as I imagined, although the interior is a huge let down compared to my D2! Still looking forward to owning one but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought hard fitting an RS6 engine into my S8, just can't find any. Tipex
I've actively avoided meeting any of my automotive hero's, as I know it'll be a major let down. I might buy a UR Quattro one day though, as even if I'm dissapointed with the drive, I can still look at it, and listen to that engine!

Tipex
But you did own a Primera once, didn't you ! Well, technically yes, but my name was never on the V5, and I killed it to death at a scrap yard afterwards too.

Mook
...and your impressions, good or bad ? I'm assuming you didn't drive it of course ! It's just drop dead gorgeous. I didn't drive that one, but that was the point at which it went to the top of my "cars to have one day" above the Porsche 550 Spyder (that most people know as "Little Bastard" that James Dean died in). I've driven one since at Goodwood. It sounds great, but it's slow and the brakes are really crap, but that's not why I'd buy one.
garcon magnifique
Going back to your opening post Duisberg, the Arnage isn't quite as refined as some would expect - it is very much a Bentley enthusiast's choice. That gearbox whine sounds wrong though - it's probably only a four speed box but it shouldn't sound like a cvt! And you need to try an Arnage T if you want one with some "go" I haven't actually been out in an Arnage, but I did get a ride in a rather nice Mulsanne Turbo about 20 years ago. Andrew
Or an Arnage Black Label. My dad had one for a bit (or rather, had the use of one) and they do shift, but in a sort of "lurching 2 tonnes at the horizon" way - it didn't ever feel sporty! I'd love to try out an AM Vantage (550 or V600 version) but running one would be a disappointment I'm sure. On PH you can still find Francis Baron's stolen one which he spent a fortune on. Starting price - £100k, now down to £65k I think. That is a huge amount of car for £65k ...

Also got a softspot for an old Turbo R or Mulsanne, but suspect they'll be awful to drive in reality.
blackjack
I met Michael Schumacher at Silverstone on the day he broke his leg there. Whether or not it had anything to do with me wishing him luck is neither here nor there. As for car heroes, the Lancia Delta Integrale ****ing ace I just wish I wasn't such a wuss or I'd get one. Do it, I miss mine, not cheap to run, and surprisingly fragile, but very very rewarding.
shao_khan
I've had the pleasure of meeting Jackie Ickx at Silverstone who let me sit in his Martini Porka of the time. Also met and spoke with Ayrton Senna who also was a very nice bloke, let me borrow an umbrella while I was collecting autographs in the F1 pitlane - security used to be far more lax :D I own my car hero - Citroen Dyane
