Hi All,

I need some sugggestions as to what car to buy next? Here is my criteria:-

budget £10-£12K

prefer a convertable

fast as possible-around -5 seconds 0-60

less than 10 years old

I was looking at boxster's but like the idea of something more unusual like a VX220 turbo?

anyone go to many track days, what cars fit the above and perform well?

any ideas guys?

Thanks

Daz

Welcome to Tyresmoke +++

0-60 in 5 secs and cabrio might narrow your options a bit. A VX220 Turbo is the obvious choice. IIRC there are a couple of owners or ex-owners lurking here somewhere, they'll know more.

TVR Chimera ? With a little fettle they'll be quick enough, sound great, but I'm not sure how robust they are for repeated track use, and they're getting old now.

A 986 Boxster S could be had for your budget, but won't quite do 5 secs, and will be an old/leggy car for that money.

BMW E36 M3 Cab ? I rather like the look of this one > PARKWAY : M3 CAB (6 Speed Manual)

Here's something a bit different, Honda S2000. 0-60 in 6.2 secs but ticks all the other boxes and can be had well inside your budget. For more go, buy an early one for c.£7k and spend £3-4k on getting it supercharged. :eclipse:

I'm sure others will have some suggestions...

nice one guys thanks, I need the car for commuting so megablade is out, looks fun though. like the alpinas but cant find one for my money?

what should i be looking for in a boxster, dont know anything about them? the 3.2l engine, any other specs?

cheers

You won't get a Boxster for that kind of money, unless it's a high-miler or an early one.

VX220 Turbos are fantastic fun and useable as a daily driver. Decent ones are still going for £15K - you just missed out on one I know which was sold within 8 hours of it going on sale.

Engine Modifications - JBS Twin Scroll Engine conversion - 388bhp, 340 ft/lbs of Torque, Dyno proven!

The engine was rebuilt by JBS using:

• SCAT forged conrods

• TOGA performance bearings

• Head skim

• Supertech Inconel valves

They then fittied their Twin Scroll Turbo Kit, including:

• IHI Twin Scroll Turbo

• JBS Equal Length Manifold

• Custom steel intake pipe

• 3" downpipe

• De-cat pipe

• Braided oil and fuel hoses

On top of the base kit the car was fitted with:

• Sachs Organic paddle clutch

• Forge Short Shifter (both front to back and side to side shifters)

• Up rated engine mounts (fast road, not track mounts, so not too harsh)

• Genesis 550cc injectors

• Forge FMIC

• Green Panel Filter

• JBS 8 bar fuel pump kit

• 4 bar regulator

• Magnex cat-back exhaust

It was then mapped with custom code phase 3 software and put on the Dyno, showing 388 bhp and 340 ft/lbs of Torque, holding boost through to about 7k rpm. In total this cost me nearly £12k! However it realistically adds about £4k-£5k to the value of the car.

Handling Modifications

The suspension has been modified over the years by APS to include:

• Lowered using face lift 'S-Line' springs, lower stance but no reduction in ride quality

• R32 anti-roll bars

• Defcon 2s

• Poly bushes

Boxster 3.2S mk1 (986), you will get one for the money, but be very very wary, it will have loads of miles on for that price. Check for oil leaks (v expensive to put right) or google 'porsche RMS' for the full story on the problem. You'll find a 2.7 for the money though, probably quick enough, and still huge fun on the right day, the 2.5 is a bit of a plodder, (which is saying somethin coming from me).

If you fancy something kraut, you may get a 911 964 cab/targa for £11k, could be an auto and/or a bit shakey for the track, but it won't depreciate and will have that air-cooled lovelyness.

Just throw another one at you - Nissan 350Z. You might get a cab for the money, I'm a huge fan of these, the looks aren't to everyone's taste but they're quick, tough, modern, and sound great. Imports are called 'Fairlady' *snigger*, 0-60 in 5.7ish IIRC but the driving experience is more important than the simple stats.

For your budget I'd go S2000 over a Boxster, apart from being a bit lively in the wet and the digital dash, they're nearly perfect. GT pack even includes a hardtop and there are a few at Honda main dealers for that price that will have a decent warranty.

Has this not been up for sale for quite a while now?

How about an Evo?

Was gonna suggest a 350Z too, shouldn't have to get such a high miler/old car as the other suggestions and are cheaper to run/own.

Not lightning quick, but damn good fun, predictable rear wheel sliding and a nice sounding V6 there. Just need to look past the Nissan badge! Had the tin top version 4 years ago - loved it!

That's probably the most sensible thing you've said all week +++

How about an E46 M3 like this ? (I forgot to copy the link and closed the window but there are plenty about under 11k with under 100kmiles and convertibles)

Let me chuck in a wild card, if you want something really really fast a B5 RS 4. I met a few owners one weekend at an MRC meet and its silly how fast them cars are, some were pushing 500 BHP and 0-60 was 4secs and under. Rare too.
