cabby
Owned an ixus for a while and keen to stick with Canon but would like something a bit more up to date and of a higher spec. Having compared the specs. of the S90, SX200IS and SX210IS the S90 'seems' to be the better option albeit that I think it's an older model. This can be had for circa £300 rather than that £480 Canon suggest. My camera/photography knowledge isn't great so was wanting some views on the spec. comparison below to see if I am make a half-decent choice. Compare Product - this should be a link to the spec. comparison.
cabby
Still can't decide which one to pick. Testfreaks rates them at 9.2, 9.2 and 8.5 so not much in them with prices as £290, £210 and £260. Have also read lots of rave reviews about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 :confused::confused:. Looks like it's probably one of the best compacts around - just not sure how 'compact' it is. My ixus has no lens protrusions when turned off and really can be put in your pocket. Decisions, decisions . . . . . . .
CarMad
It depends what you want to do with the camera. The S90 is less consumer more prosumer model of compacts it has a good sensor but not great video. The S210 however will give you more zoom and a better video but the sensor isn't as good. I'm looking at getting the Samsung WB2000, its got a cracking backlit sensor and good optics add to that its got 1080p video and can take RAW plus it has a lovely 3" OLED screen on the back with 640k pixels. I'm going to get this to take with me when I don't have the SLR. Its about £300 ish by the way. On the LX3 its about to be replaced and the lump on the front and the need to hold the lens cap all the time means its not that pocket-able or convenient for a P&S. CarMad
By the way I wrote this a while ago on some of the newer top end compacts. GumpDump Blog Archive Need a new top end compact but which one? – Updated There is also a new Canon Powershot on the way out as well but its only just been announced not sure when its released. Its to go up against the Sony and Samsung for good low light cameras.
cabby
Thanks - very helpful. I've noticed I do tend to record a number of video clips so decent HD recording could be quite attractive. I wouldn't have really considered Samsung in the context of cameras and - from a personal perspective - as a particularly good quality brand but that model looks cracking. Amazing that you can shoot HD video and take a picture at the same time. Also, from the pics I've seen the build quality looks very good. Not sure about the battery and memory dials though ! CarMad
I quite like them but I can see they are a personal taste. Samsung are doing very well with the NX10 at the moment and they also have another model that has a great lens and sensor but not the good video. That model is the TL500 or EX1, its larger and more of a competitor to the G11 but looks like it is going to be good. But I don't want anything that big if I want to take great shots I will have the SLR. I think the sensor in the Samsung is the same as the new Sonys(its a sony built sensor), Canon have been using the same Sony sensors as well. Waylander
Interesting thread. Could I ask, in your round-up how come the Fuji F200EXR or the F70/80EXRs were not included (especially coming from an F30 background??) I am bored of my F31FD [nothing more than that!] and btw comparing pix with friends have never found the lowlight performance exceptional - maybe I just didnt set it up right. Anyway I wouldn't mind either: something just as good but much slimmer OR something with better performance (I like the EXR images I have seen online!) but still P&S friendly. CarMad
Because I wanted something that had a good lens that was fairly quick and was able to take raw and HD video if possible. The Fuji's are rubbish for video and the optics are ok ish. As for the Fuji F30 / 31 they still go for good money on e-bay because of how good they are. Even comparing them to some of the current top end compacts it still beats them. Even Fuji said themselves in the launch material of the EXR cameras that it was the first time they have been able to replicate the performance of the F30. Waylander
I see. thanks for clarifying. That 6shot summation feature of the Sony in low-light. Does that do the same thing as EXR?
Sponge
Not sure if you know this, but Canon are doing cashback on their Powershots at the moment. Canon UK - Canon Cashback Offers and Promotions
cabby
Not sure if you know this, but Canon are doing cashback on their Powershots at the moment. Canon UK - Canon Cashback Offers and Promotions Ta . Still very much undecided. Quite swayed by Sony's HX5V now. HD movies would be useful for me and it's full of all sorts of trickery so something the gadget freak in me is drawn to.
CarMad
Yeah I quite liked the idea of the Sony but it offers no control at all. Thats OK if you don't know anything about photography and just want to keep things simple, not if you want the control and I want the control. Jez
One thing to think about for the HD video, if you want to share it with friends or family the file sizes can be quite large ruling out things like e-mailing clips. I have the S90 as a pocket camera when I can't be arsed to carry my DSLR and I love it and the lower res video was actually a bonus for me because of the size restrictions of HD. Waylander
Carmad what are your views on the Sony TX5/7? Ultracompact; low light quality looks excellent with the 6-shot combining thingy The canon Ixus 300 looks great too but a little rich for my tastes.. Waylander
Cabby did you get one yet - if so which one? I have decided to go for the Sony TX5 as it is a great size, I like the Twilight Mode and Sweep Panorama. I prefer the waterproof and ruggedness over HD video when comparing it and the TX7. Will get one very soon so will be selling my F31fd
cabby
Not yet - still can't decide. Swaying towards a Lumix, possibly the TZ10.
