Folks, I need a new mobile that I can use to send email on the move. We don't have a server so I need a phone that can sync my inbox and sent items etc. when I get back to the office.

Don't need owt flash, just something that will do this and has a reasonable camera, bluetooth and 3G +++

Thought about a HTC?

Don't want an iphone as I've already got an ipod for my music and rarely carry it around. Its either in my car or in the docking station!

Previously had Nokia but the last three I've had have been shockingly bad. I'm on my 5th 6700 and its the first one thats worked properly :ffs:

Got a Desire and the missus has an X10. Desire is better in my opinion the interface makes it for me and the X10s one is just plain awkward to use.

Emails, I've got my gmail and hotmail accounts setup as well as my calendar syncing through Google (also sync'd with my work calendar for 1 central location). Prefer to use work webmail access so I can check when I want as I get so many - I dont want them constantly pinging up and this is not meant to be a work phon . You can though use Exchange Activesync to access those on the move if you want there's also a htc sync app for when you hook up to the pc (not used either).

Have you got hosted exchange or are you using web mail ? Nokia seem to work OK with hosted exchange but had problems with mine so went for BB with full BES but not the solution it sounds you want. When getting the BB working tech support said Windows Mobile devices were best for Activesync with hosted exchange (after telling me to get a BB...)

Having used the Nokia & the BB the BB is definitely better but is a very expensive solution so I would go for a Win Mobile device if mostly desk based but need e-mail when out & about or BB if away from desk a lot. iPhone also offers Activesync though have never used so can't advise either way.

Cheers for the info chaps.

This looks like the one I need. I mainly work in the office, but if I'm out on surveys or visits for the day I just want to be able to check my email, send the odd reply and then sync it with the desktop when I get back to the office so that the reply goes into my sent items on the desktop.

The ability to read pdf's and excel sheets would be useful so I'd need something with decent screen size and I'm guessing, the windows mobile software?

Still not convinced with the iphone but one of engineers has one so I can borrow that to try before I buy. Does the iphone have the windows mobile system or would I have to buy it as an app? +++

Windows mobile is the OS for the phones that IT said worked best with ActiveSync for Exchange although as I understand iPhone has improved greatly with this. The Nokia (E75) was pretty perfect as a smart phone that let me look at last 2 weeks of E-Mail plus it synced up sent/open reply properly which I believe the iPhone doesn't do.

Both the Nokia & the BB came with cut down versions of "office" pre-installed which let me open all attachments - ppt, doc, xls & pdf so no problems there.

The only reason I deserted the Nokia was it became a bit problematic after an over the air software update despite re-building it with the cable a few times it became too idosyncratic for my liking & could see it letting me down before I was out of the office for a week. If it was occasional use then I would have stuck with it - the other bit I didn't like was the slider keyboard meant you needed both hands to type so useless standing on the train & trying to hold a cup of coffee etc. As a phone it was very good though.

Bon't understand how anyone has a BB on BIS this is a terrible solution so avoid like the plague ! The Nokia E Series & the BB have the ability to be wiped remotely (e-mails SMS is completely separate - or I hope judging by what we say on SMS wouldn't say on e-mail !) whereas the iPhone did not although I have heard there is a solution for this now - it may depend upon if you have hosted Exchange rather than run your own Exchange servers so you may or may not have this option & this may or may not be important to you depending on the confidentiality of your e-mails.

I know that I can log into my work emails with Outlook Web Access on an exchange server on the HD2 (WinMo) but colleagues with blackerries and iphones can either not at all or can log in but not reply etc

With the BB they need a minimum of BIS which had to be configured via vodafone + some of the settings are far more complex it took tech support a while to get my BB going but the Nokia was just a simple matter of inputting the server details, PW etc. I believe iPhone uses Active Sync so as long as this is supported on your server it should be fairly simple to configure but no idea how well it works regarding showing if things have been read/replied/forwarded etc. between the 2 mailboxes (this worked well on the Nokia) the BB running on the BES full service doesn't show the same icons as Outlook only opened/not opened so less impressed with this side of things. Remote search etc. does seem to work very well.

Read an article that BB has 63% of business smartphone market but as Exchange gets easier to access I can see that eroding unless they step up the features instead of sponsoring rock concerts to try to sell then to kids.

Here is a link to the people who host our Exchange - it shows how to set up the various phones & also mentions the features you do/don't get with the different platforms.

Active Office Portal - Welcome

Hope this helps make the decision easier

Cheers All. Some helpful stuff there. Not keen on Crackberries as the screens are small(ish) but this could well do everything I need;

HTC Touch? 3G | Touch 3G | HTC smartphone | Orange business

Looks like a very capable device and I know someone that has an older HTC and thinks its fantastic.
