Non-rSAP phones

Recommended Posts

Really are they worthwhile with the Audi Bluetooth kits? What about rural areas where the signal is a bit bad?

I've got a real dilemma with phones. I currently have a Nokia 6500 Classic and an HTC Touch Pro (WinMo) phone. I'm looking for an upgrade and to merge the phones into one smartphone.

The Nokia has been great at rSAP, so I've had a better signal in Lincolnshire's slightly hilly bits, but it still does have a few flat spots (O2).

I'm a bit concerned that if I upgrade to an iPhone, or an Android phone (I like the look of the HTC Desire) I might end up with a much poorer signal and a phone that I effectively can't use in the car (and I'd have wasted money on Bluetooth high!).

The only modern smartphone I'd consider that has rSAP is the HTC HD2 running WinMo. Sense looks very nice, but the reviews all say that there's niggling little bits of WinMo behind the scenes that aren't finger-friendly.

What about dual-SIM? Anyone know if Vodafone still offer this? It would be nice if one mobile number worked when I was in the car or not without me having to remember to divert calls.

Anyone got any thoughts? Is the lure of a nice shiny new smartphone worth giving up rSAP for?

I'd really like to merge my two handsets, but good Exchange email and calendaring on the move is a must. I know Nokia do support it, but it's not as functional as WinMo IMHO.

I guess I'm looking at the HD2 then. Shame it doesn't have the Desire's OLED screen.

i`ve tried 3 phones, infact still got 1 in the box, they were all fine apart from 2 issues, 1.... power, because you have 2 sims for some reason it really drains the battery. I`ve been trying to do the same as you Chris (2 sims 1 phone) for a while now but still haven`t found a good one. I even got some of them dual sim phones from China but the same problem eats battery. 2nd issue was the bluetooth side because there were 2 sims in the phone they wouldn`t connect because it was getting confused which sim to use for the connection.

I`m really supprised that there is not much available for the dual sim in the UK from mobile operators, as there is a market out there.

if you do find one let me now please.

Johnny, I think Chris and me want the DUAL SIM(s) with the same number, not a DUAL SIM phone.

With DUAL SIM(s) you get a master and slave SIM, put the master in the car and the slave in the handset. When the car is off the handset is in use and when the car is in use the master SIM in the car takes over and the handset does not ring.

Really it's not possible to use a DUAL SIM phone in a car with rSAP as only one of the SIMs will be connected.

I called Vodafone yesterday and enquired about the Dual Sim, and the tech guy did say that they are available, but very diffficult to arrange. They are sending some info to me this week, as soon as i hear anything i will post the results.

Of much interest, please let us know if you hear anything, thanks! +++

Vodafone were telling lies about the Dual Sim. What they can offer is a two Sim Contract with Auto Divert. So yes you get two Sim's, but along with having to pay for two contracts!!!!!!:mad::mad:

Apparently Vodafone stopped this service of having two Sim's with one contract a few years ago when 3G became available.

So it looks like none of us will be able to use the Sim slot in the MMI. :ffs:

Sorry if i got anyones hopes up.

Thought it was too good to be true. Too many of my customers have converted from the early A6/A8/Q7 in car handset to bluetooth because they cannot get a DUAL SIM conttract from any operator.

I know it;s not exatcly what you are looking for but the closest I've managed to get to it is on an Orange contract. I have a second SIM on the same contract which costs a small supplement (£5 month of the top of my head). The second SIM goes in the car phone and stays there. When I get in the car I switch off my main mobile and all calls are automatically diverted to the car phone. Works great every time.

There is a drawback - when you make outgoing calls with the car phone, it uses a different number which can confuse some people as they don't know who is calling but I haven't had many issues with this. The other drawback (and this would apply to any dual SIM set up) i that when you turn off your main phone, callers do not go straight to your voicemail but are redirected to your car phone which will ring if it has been left on. Once it isn't answered the caller is redirected to your voicemail as normal.

It works well for me and it means I can chose a phone for everyday without having to worry about it's compatibility with the car and a phone sepcifically for the car.

I've been using a Nokia E71 with rsap in my A6 for 2 years without a problem, has calendar, uses Exchange E-mail for work E-mails plus Nokia messaging so I also get my personal E-mails, also syncs with PC via Nokia PC Suite, plus has GPS and Nokia Sat Nav.

Only problem is with syncing contacts to the A6, it use Nokia Download manager and is sometimes a bit hit and miss. Thinking of changing to the E72 when I find the right deal.
