Well, the time has come. It's just passed it's MOT and I think it's now time to let her go. :(

I'm asking around, measuring interest, in the hope to avoid ebay. I need to get some up to date pictures, but here's one to get us started. Please don't judge her too harshly. She hasn't had a wash in a long time. I intend to clean up the wheels, chassis, bodywork as best I can. She will look a lot better. :o

I'm working on an ebay listing, so will just paste what I have so far:

I’ve had this vehicle for over 11 years and loved every minute of ownership. I have lots of fond memories and I’ve spent a lot of time and money on it, which is one reason I’m reluctant to let it go. But needs must and now it has its MOT, here it is:

1979 Land Rover Series 3, Short Wheel Base, 2.5di Diesel, with Fairey Overdrive, Free-Wheeling Hubs and Safari Roof.

MOT until 26th September 2011.

TAX until end of June 2011.

Current mileage recorded as 01619miles – but it’s obviously done more than that during its life!

From MOT certificates:

09/10 - 01619

09/09 - 01451

08/08 - 01391

08/07 - 01337

07/06 – 01091

07/05 – 00945

07/03 - 00642

04/02 – 99415

01/00 - 96770

01/99 – 94320

02/98 - 91847

02/97 – 87917

04/96 – 85788

02/95 – 81184

03/94 - 71166

Regularly serviced. Most recently prior to last MOT (Sept ’10, oil and filter change.)

The previous owner bought it from a dealer in August 1994 for £3250. They had performed an engine transplant; replacing it with a 2.5 diesel from a Ford Transit.

I have a folder full of receipts for parts, servicing, works done, etc, from the previous owner and I’ve added to that folder substantially since I bought it in 1999.

Here are some examples of what's been done:

Halogen headlamps (to replace sealed units). Timing belt and water pump replaced September 1999.

Replaced fuel injectors 2000.

Gearbox professionally replaced in March 2002 at a total cost (inc. labour and ancillaries) of over £1000. (Receipts provided.)

Starter motor 2004.

New fuel tank fitted May 2007.

Brake pipes replaced with copper units 200*

Spare wheel hanger on rear door.

Breather pipes fitted to front and rear diffs.

Free-wheeling hubs.

Fairey overdrive. (No whines, or noises.)

Safari roof.

The chassis has had work done to it over the years – rear cross-member replaced, out-riggers replaced, the odd patch here and there.

The bulkhead is in reasonable condition for its age. Nothing major to report. I recently had to reinforce the area behind the heater blower/fan and brake master cylinder.

I replaced the door tops a couple of years ago and the driver’s side has corroded somewhat on the inside. (I'll be working on that this weekend.)

The paintwork is a bit dull and faded, peeling in places, e.g. the wing-tops, but I’m sure as a Series 3 enthusiast you don’t worry about such things! ;-)

There was a dent to the front of the near-side wing, which I hammered out (not very well if I’m honest).

I used to go ‘green laning’ and the ‘Rover collected a few battle scars during that time. But I stopped messing about in the mud about 6 or 7 years ago. The car has been used for trips to the tip, going to work, storing an old pram!

So, there it is. She has to go, the wife has decreed it! If I’m honest, I just don’t use it enough day to day to warrant the annual costs, i.e. tax & insurance, so I’m saying goodbye.

£900 ono
